SEND 📼 TO SEE ONE OF LOGAN'S MEMORIES || ACCEPTING
It's here. It's always been here. He's come to know that now. But really, what a strange place for this thing to be. He'd almost thought his senses were on the fritz when he tracked it here.
"Found it." He grunts to himself. ... Well, not just to himself.
"Good job, Wolverine." Agent Hennessy comes in through his earpiece. "Is it intact?"
Logan jumps down, his boots thudding against the hull of the space craft.
"Seems to be." He replies. He crouches and knocks his hand against the shell. It makes a deep, hollow sound. "Doesn't look operational. Not getting any signs of life inside, either." He straightens again, tilting his ear just to be sure he didn't miss any sounds. Nothing, aside from the birds, a few mouse-heartbeats in the field, the wind through the grass and the trees. Hardly noteworthy.
"You're sure?" Hennessy asks. There's a bit of chatter in the background. Someone asks a question, judging by the tone, but Logan doesn't give Hennessy a chance to pass it along.
"One way to find out." His statement is punctuated by both the snikt of his claws extending and a flurry of protest from the ear piece. The 'no wait's and 'you don't know what that's made of's and 'hold on's are half-buried under the screech of metal slicing metal.
Adamantium 1, Space Alloy, 0.
"Sorry, boss. Ya' must've cut out for a second there." He knows they can hear him chuckling over the microphone. He peels back the sliced metal, gritting his teeth against the whine it lets out, and hops down into the resulting abyss. "I'm in."
"Of course you are." Hennessy sighs. Logan can almost imagine him pinching the bridge of his nose. "What do you see?"
"It's trashed." Logan frowns, looking around. "Not surprising. This wasn't a happy landing."
"Any bodies?" Hennessy asks, almost too eager. Logan grunts and sniffs the air.
"Not in this room." He takes a few steps forward. "Looks like it was some kind of cargo hold. It's just a little smaller than the showers back at base."
"'S a fancy shoe box." Cortez' voice in the background. Logan snickers.
"No." Logan cuts Hennessy off. "I think it's further in. I'm gonna keep looking."
"Copy." Hennessy says. "Keep your radio on. I wanna hear everything that happens."
"Roger that." Logan nods, even if they won't see. He picks his way over scattered rocks and metal scraps, twists of wiring that had fallen out of the ceiling or come up from the floor and long since gone dead. He keeps an ear out as he goes. There's the subtle shift of groaning metal as the ruined ship adjusts to his weight, and the softer sounds of burrowing creatures in the dirt beyond. Worms, beetles, the larger snuffling of a mole or two. And there's another sound - a strange, high-pitched whine. It's not mechanical, and not electrical, though the latter is definitely the more apt comparison. But where was it coming from? Logan furrows his brow. He finds the door and braces his shoulder against it, grunting as he forces it open. It let out an ear-shredding groan of rusted mechanisms as it slid into the wall. If it was hard for him to move, it really had to be in rough shape.
"Think I got something." He brushed his shoulder off and continued into the ship. Not for the first time in his life, he was grateful for his vision being so much better than a human's.
"What is it?" That's Smith, with his smoker's rasp crackling over the speakers and mostly covering Hennessy's annoyed 'tch'.
"Not sure yet." Logan glances around a corner. It's a long hallway, with a few more doors along the sides. It's not where he needs to go, so while he makes note of it, he turns away. "Following the trail now. You got any readings on the energy or radiation levels?"
"Cortez?" Smith's voice pulls away from the speaker.
"Negative." Cortez replies. "Just the same general blip that drew us to the area. Why, you picking anything up?" Logan turned down another corridor. Just as dark as the others, but not quite as narrow. There's a shape at the end of the hall; Logan narrows his eyes and crouches a bit. It's not alive, he knows that much. But there's something else about it that has his hackles rising.
"Logan?" Cortez asks again. Logan growls to himself and creeps forward.
"Hold that thought." He said. The radio chatter falls silent. He steps forwards, keeping his eyes on the alien corpse. It looks mostly humanoid - pretty heavily built, green-skinned... Kinda lumpy. That was odd enough, but what really drew his eye was the hole in the back of its head. He crouches beside where it slumps, face-first into the wall. There's a faint smear of what inspection says is likely the species' equivalent of blood smeared down the wall, leading to its head. Doesn't look like there's any splatters around. That means, either this guy got tossed around in the crash without leaving any marks and ended up exactly where he'd died in the first place, or...
"What is it?" Hennessy asks, at the same time as Logan hears Smith's gruff 'what'? in the background.
"The hell did you say-?!" Complete with the audible scuffle as Smith once again shoves Hennessy out of the way of the microphone.
"Found a body, and all signs point to it bein' executed after the crash. Something got in here, and I'm not picking up any foreign scents. ... Looks like the sorry bastard was tryin' to get at your 'reactivity core'." Logan ran his fingers around the charred skin of the entry wound, then brushed them over the dried blood on the wall before standing up.
"Did they find it?" Smith again, hurried, desperate.
"Found it," Logan says, "but didn't get to it. The door's still closed and it sounds like somethin's runnin' in there. Whoever took this guy out either couldn't open it, or didn't want to."
"Why wouldn't they want to...?" Hennessy muses, having successfully wrestled back control of his mic. Logan extends one set of claws, holding his fist upright.
"One way to find out." He says.
"Be careful, Wolverine." Hennessy sighs, and Logan chuckles.
"Aw, you do care." Another few swings of his claws and a solid kick, and the door falls down. The sound is loud, hollow, and echoing. and inside the otherwise pitch-dark room is a faint square of green light - the reactivity core glowing from around the rim of some kind of hatch. "Bingo."
"Holy shit, you got it?" Cortez sounds amazed; Logan snorts.
"I told ya', I can find anything." One last claw-swipe for the road. "It's fuckin' bright." He had to close his eyes and he could still see every vein illuminated through his lids. Ow. Keeping his eyes shut tight, he reaches forwards and grabs the core. It's warm, but not hot, and vibrates - and has a weird, static feeling against his palm. "Bringin' it back with me."
"Please tell me you've got a lead pouch or something." If 'getting grey hair' could be a tone of voice, it would sound like that.
"Nope." Logan turned to leave.
"You better not die of radiation poisoning." Cortez huffed.
"I'm immune, bub. Ain't gonna do shit to me." He said as he picked his way over the body again. "... Might have to make it a pit-stop, though. Call me the cat that got fucked over, but I wanna find out where the gun-slinger went."
"That's not what our orders are," a stern warning that Logan shrugged off.
"Nice to meet ya', Hennessy. I'm Wolverine." The dull thud of a head hitting a desk came through his ear piece.
"Just make it back in one piece first, alright?" Logan grinned.
" Set a timer, boss. I'll be back in twenty."
