Got to visit one of my favourite northern spots this past week, Whitefish Island!

A small but bustling park, Whitefish Island belongs to the Batchewana First Nation. A historic fishing ground, the island went through the depressingly familiar story of being taken away by the government and then railway companies for decades, until the Batchewana finally got it back in 1998. You can read the fascinating history of the island here!

Now, it’s maintained as a beautiful little park that’s open to the public, and it is full of wildlife! It takes you along the rapids of St Mary’s River, and is also right next to the Sault Ste Marie National Historic Site. It’s a fascinating little spot!
