Fiona Frauenfeld who is opinionated and brash, always has been, but was always quiet about it, because a village where nobody likes you is hell on earth to live in. So she says nothing, when in company, only whispers under her breath, scathing when walking over the village green and watching a gaggle of boys release a badger to chase some of the younger girls. Only growls lowly when the butcher raises his prices because she refused his son.

It doesn't save her in the end. She keeps her voice level and polite, as honest as she can, even as times grow hard, looks grow suspicious and minds weary. They still grab her from her home, smash her dishes and try to drown her.

After that, she doesn't speak at all.

Fiona Frauenfeld, who meets Hugh Apiston, a boy with bees in his stomach, loud and kind and just as accepting of her silence as he is of her views and ill temper. Fiona Frauenfeld, who is opiniated and just when she meets someone who'd let her be loud about it, loses her voice in the worst way.

"Are you gonnae eat that?" Lochlan asked, pointing to the dead body Cormack was apparently trying to dispose of. "Cause if you're not, I'll take it off your hands."

Cormack had nothing to hide, but that didn’t mean he liked dead bodies littering the path. The man’s head had been sliced clean off--a beautiful job, if he did say so himself. Clean as clean could be. After Cormack had shoved his sword back down to his side and jumped from his horse’s back, he got to work dragging the headless body along the riverside, looking for a nice hidden spot to stash it until some unfortunate villager no doubt came upon it.

Of course he would meet Lochlan here. Who could forget the resident kelpie? Cormack just grinned slyly, dropping the corpse onto the ground and standing up straight. “Have at it.” he said, nudging the dead man’s shoulder with a boot-clad foot. “I don’t exactly...eat. Not flesh, at any rate. Help yourself. I have no use for this rotten shell.”

CORMACK LIKES TO TOUCH HIS OWN BUTT

"Y'hear about the Scottish dwarf vampire who owned a microbrewery?" Lochlan asked the selkie, biting his lower lip for a second to keep from laughing at his own stupid joke. "They called him Plaid the Imp Aler."

It took Iona a good moment to really let the joke sink in, but when it did, the biggest grin spread across her speckled cheeks. She laughed once, a little too loudly, before covering her mouth with both hands and giggling between her fingers. “Oh my goodness, that was horrible but I adore it.” She took a deep breath and let it out again, still laughing quietly within the stream of air. “You’re too much.”

"What did the sheep say to the annoying farmboy?" Lochlan asked, unsure if Wisp would understand a joke or not. "You're really pressin' my muttons!"

Wisp didn’t hear many jokes, really, but when they did hear a joke, they enjoyed it whole-heartedly! This time was no different. Wisp waited with bated breath, and when the joke reached their ears, they let out the tiniest, most adorable giggle. “I understand!” They were extremely excited. “B-because sheep, and-and-and buttons! Oh, that’s lovely!”

"Cormack, if the Blarney Stone were a man, would kissing it make me Gaelic?" Lochlan asked, doing his absolute best to hold back a huge grin.

The look on Cormack’s face, or what part of his face was actually visible, was perfectly dead. He had died inside. This joke did him in for good. Rest in pieces, sweet prince.

“I...it...you would...” For once, he was at a complete loss for words. It took him a moment to get his composure back, but when he did, he was no less confused. “...Dear lord, why not? Yes.”

◎ "You think if I took your head down with me, you'd drown? Just your head though!"

Oh boy, here he went again with the ridiculousness. Comments about his appearance, he could take, but threats to remove his head and shove it under the water? No thank you. “Let’s not find out.” Cormack said, one hand reaching to his side to hover near the handle of his sword. “Touch my head and you’ll lose fingers, you overgrown pony.”

Had she? That was a good question. Iona thought about it very briefly before shaking her head. “No.” she answered in honesty. “It’s a part of who I am, of who I’ve always been. I wouldn’t be myself if I wasn’t a selkie anymore. Then, I’d just be a human, and not a very interesting one at that. My human life is very dull, you see.”
