Butt blankets are an important feature. Unlike many bats, the hoary bat has a fully furred uropatagium (the membrane that stretches between its tail and hind legs). This fur extends across the tail membrane, giving it a fluffy, hoary (frosted-gray) appearance. Function: •The tail membrane aids in flight stability and maneuverability. •It’s also used in prey capture—the bat can scoop insects into the membrane mid-flight. •The fur helps with thermoregulation, keeping the bat warm during roosting or in flight at cooler temperatures.
