The Wool Shed

San Juan County Fair

When I post about the San Juan County Fair I often mention the wool shed. This is it: a long, low, barn-red building tucked away at the north edge of the fairgrounds. I walked through on Sunday afternoon before the 2025 fair closed, reflecting on how much time and effort go into entrants' projects, no doubt including pride in their work, hope and some uncertainty about the evaluation of their entries.

For all that, the underlying privilege isn't lost on me: discretionary funds that pay for large quantities of materials; weeks or months of time used to transform those materials into art. Even here, on beautiful San Juan Island WA.
