“Did you wanna...” Nancy wasn’t sure what she was going to say. What she wanted to say. She just... she wanted things to be better. She wanted things to go back to... nor normal. Not how they were. She didn’t want to pretend to be okay anymore, but she didn’t want this. Shs didn’t want what ever this weird distance was. She wanted... She wasn’t sure. “Did you want to talk, I guess?”

     Nancy frowned at him and shook her head a little as she took a bite of her lunch. “Yeah, because that’s what a girl wants to hear from her boyfriend. God, Steve...” She was embarrassed by her sudden uptake in nightmares. She thought she’d done well in hiding how tired she felt, but there was only so much concealer in the world that could cover her under eyes.

     Her lips tightened as she brought her gaze to look at Steve through her lashes. “Sorry...”

Steve would be lying if he said that learning she’s never been in love with him wasn’t exactly what he’d been terrified of hearing. He looks down at his sneakers nodding slightly, trying to ignore the ache in his chest and focus on the fact that he did genuinely appreciate being told the truth. He nods a couple of times, “Well shit.”

“i’m sorry, steve. i’m SO sorry.”

honestly, nancy doesn’t know what else to say. she couldn’t force herself to feel a certain way, and she’d thought that maybe it could come. that things would change and she’d go from simply caring about him to really being IN LOVE with him. she realizes now though that she was just headed for the mess her parents seemed to be in and that was the last thing either of them needed.
