The Great Nickel Debate: Pure vs. Plated
If you've spent any time in battery building communities, you've seen the arguments. "Just use pure nickel." "Nickel-plated steel is fine for low drain." "My welder can't weld pure nickel."
I've been building battery packs for about three years now, and I finally decided to settle this for myself. I ordered several samples of different nickel sheet materials and put them through some real-world tests.
🔬 Test 1: The Magnet Test
This is the easiest way to tell what you're actually holding.
Pure Nickel: A magnet will NOT stick. (Slight magnetic pull is normal due to work hardening, but it won't cling.)
Nickel-Plated Steel: The magnet grabs on immediately.
I tested multiple nickel sheets for battery use, and the ones labeled as "pure" but attracted magnets? Yeah, those went straight into the reject pile.
⚡ Test 2: Voltage Drop Under Load

The plated steel started heating up noticeably at 10A. By 15A? Too hot to touch. For high-drain applications like power tools or e-bikes, pure nickel tabs aren't optional — they're essential.
I did 10 welds on each material and tried to peel them off.
Pure Nickel: Consistent welds. When I really yanked on them, the nickel sheet tore before the weld let go. That's what you want.
Plated Steel: Inconsistent. Some welds were strong, some popped right off. The steel core doesn't weld to nickel the same way pure nickel does.
🌧️ Test 4: Corrosion Resistance
I left samples outside for two weeks. Rain, sun, the works.
Pure Nickel: Still shiny. Wiped clean like nothing happened.
Plated Steel: Rust spots along the cut edges where the steel was exposed.
So... What Should You Use?
For high-drain builds (e-bikes, power tools, vapes): Pure nickel tabs. No question. The performance and safety are worth the extra cost.
For low-drain projects (LED lights, small battery banks, prototypes): Quality nickel sheets for battery use that are actually pure are still better, but if budget is tight and you understand the limits, plated steel can work.
For anything you care about not catching on fire: Pure. Nickel.
When you're shopping for nickel sheet, look for suppliers that specify "99.6% pure nickel" or similar. If they don't list the purity? Ask. If they can't tell you? Walk away.
And always, ALWAYS do the magnet test when your order arrives.
