Malcolm’s Favourite Matches Of 2016 (in chronological order) 

#6: Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship WWE Battleground 2016 July 24th - Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

The triple threat match between the former Shield members did not disappoint.  With the brand split looming, this was not only a battle for the WWE Championship, but for which brand the WWE Championship would be featured on.  The defending Champion Dean Ambrose would represent SmackDown whilst Seth and Roman were both RAW Draftees.

The familiarity between the three led to an entertaining match, with the feel-good moment of Dean Ambrose emerging victorious with a clean victory and then celebrating his win with the new SmackDown roster (featuring super excited SmackDown dads Shane and Daniel).

The build might have been lacking, mostly due to Roman's suspension meaning that Dean and Seth had to carry it all themselves (and to their credit they did a very good job even if having them face each other twice in the same week wasn’t the best decision), but the match itself was really fun!  On any other given PPV it would have easily been Match Of The Night.

Top to bottom, Battleground was probably my favourite PPV of 2016.  One show I'd definitely recommend giving a re-watch.  Everything would change after this show, as the newest incarnation of the Brand Split would take full effect from here on in...for better or worse.

So I actually struggled to choose ten pictures for today’s choice for my Matches Of 2016 pic-sets, so here are some others that I really liked but didn’t end up using for whatever reasons.

Malcolm’s Favourite Matches Of 2016 (in chronological order) 

#5: Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens WWE Battleground 2016 July 24th - Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Their match at Payback was very, very good.  This was even better. 

Billed as the final encounter between the two bitter rivals (AHAHAHAHA who do you think you’re fooling?) there was no better match at telling an in-ring story this year than this one, in my opinion.  They were given nearly twenty minutes to work with (and was actually the longest match on the card...by about 20 seconds), and crafted a masterpiece of the art of professional wrestling. 

Sami's never-say-die attitude was on full display, and the frustration Owens was feeling as a result was palpable.  Sami pulling the final trigger on Owens was a rather cathartic moment for anyone who'd followed this feud all the way to this point, as Sami finally slayed (or is it slew?) the shadow that had haunted him for so long.

It should have been the match that catapulted both men into the upper echelons of WWE...but that's an issue best left for another day.
