being with dennis is so simple. it's natural, as easy as breathing. they look after each other. texts during their shifts to check in, him leaving snacks in the break room for her and, of course, making time to see each other outside of work. belle's even fallen asleep on him once or twice. he's such a good friend to her. and that's exactly why she's chosen to keep her growing feelings for him inside. she doesn't want to risk it. the bond they have is too precious for her to ruin with such a confession. after all, there's no way he'd feel the same way. right?

the day was stressful, a major incident causing them to work well into the night. her place is closer to the hospital so she offered dennis her couch for the night, something has happened on more than one occasion. at the present moment, neither of them felt like sleep would come easy so a movie was put on, allowing them both a distraction. and at some point during the movie, belle had started to rest her head against dennis and his arm had wrapped around her, holding her closer. not strange, this usually happened when they were watching something. what was different though, is the way that dennis was looking at her. he shifts and his face becomes level with hers, no words being shared before his lips meet hers.

the kiss doesn't last long, only a few seconds, before it breaks. but neither of them has pulled away. and it takes her a moment or two for what has just transpired to sink in. he had kissed her. kissed her. not on the cheek. not on the head. on the lips. a real kiss.

❝ den... ❞ she can't even finish saying his name. it catches in her throat, more out of nervousness than anything else. her eyes scan his face for any sign of regret, of that being a mistake or a spur of the moment decision with no intention behind it. but she doesn't find anything of the sort. just his usual gentle expression, a little more unsure than normal but what just happened was anything but normal. her gaze lingers on him a little longer but the space between them hasn't increased at all. so, she decides to take a chance and closes the gap between them again, kissing dennis again.

Knees pulled up to her chin, Sylvie had been so sure that nobody would find her here, tucked away in a deserted room in peds with nothing but the garishly bright jungle animals on the wall keeping her company. Obviously she had come here to shed a few tears, this afternoon taking everything out of her until she felt like a husk of a human being.

So when she heard the door open, the familiar voice asking if she's okay, Sylvie could only wipe her reddened cheeks and force a smile. He'll go away in a minute, she told herself. He'll leave and you can keep questioning your entire worldview in peace.

"I'm not leaving until I know you're okay."

A glance up towards Whitaker and Sylvie knew he wasn't giving up that easily, a sigh on her lips as she hugged her knees closer. "I'm okay, seriously. I'm just..." A slight crack, a huff. "Just breathing."

" I ain't that sick , that's what I keep tryin' to tell ya people! " she's able to grab onto the arm of a passerby , ( he looked too young to be any sort of doctor, maybe a new nurse? ) They had to try harder than some regular run of the mill handcuffs , if only they knew of her tendency to magically get out of restraints, she hasn't met a pair yet. Now that she seemingly had his attention . " I just wanna grab some meds , and then get outta here , ya don't gotta tell nobody about it. "

"Oh, well, that's definitely broken, then."

Send, "Oh, well, that's definitely broken, then." for receiver to faint whilst sender is giving them medical treatment.

He was used to handling pain. His tolerance was high; you got chucked around a lot as a doctor, and he'd been a clumsy student, so he'd had more slips trips and falls that most. But he'd known, the second that he'd hit the floor, that this one had been bad. Really bad. White hot pain lancing through his body, his head spinning, nausea not from concussion but from his brain trying to reconcile with the now out of place section of calcium. When Dennis started his exam, everything had begun to be a burning wall of white. He vaguely heard the words and then went limp, features washed out as the world blinked. When he stirred, maybe thirty seconds later, the pain was far from gone and there were an awful lot of bodies around him now.

“  will you please just stay for once.  just.  don’t walk away.  ”

The words stop Jack halfway to the door. For a moment, he doesn't turn around. One hand remains wrapped around the handle, his shoulders tense beneath the weight of everything he hasn't said. The easiest thing would be to leave. It always is. Walk out, convince himself he's doing the right thing, tell himself that putting distance between them is the responsible choice.

The problem is that Dennis isn't wrong.

A slow breath leaves him before he finally looks back. "Dennis..." His voice is quieter now, stripped of the frustration that had been carrying it a few minutes ago. "You keep asking me to stay like it's the hard part." A faint, humorless smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. "Staying is easy."

His gaze drops briefly before returning to him. The honesty is uncomfortable, but he's too tired to dodge it tonight.

"The hard part is standing here and pretending I don't know exactly why this is a bad idea." He shakes his head once. "You're a resident. I'm your attending. There's an age gap big enough that half the hospital would have opinions about it. Every logical part of my brain keeps telling me to walk away before this becomes something neither of us can ignore."

"And the really shitty part?" His fingers loosen around the door handle. "I don't want to."

[ 🗡️ ]ㅤ what is a scar that they have but never talk about ?

belle has a horizontal scar on her chin, close to her neck. it's small, about an inch in length and not really noticable unless you're really close to her or she mentions it. according to her father, she got it when she was three following a fall on granite flooring. the reason she doesn't talk about it is simple: she just doesn't actually remember the incident and often forgets the scar is even there unless she feels it during her skincare routine.

honestly, belle is the sort of person who is more likely regret something she did do over what she didn't. the closest thing that i can think of is that sometimes belle thinks that she should have gone into nursing rather than becoming a paramedic. she is aware that she can undergo a course to become an RN but she isn't entirely sure of that path. it's not a regret as such but sometimes she wonders if she made the right choice.
