100 Days of Trump: Day 17, A Series of Unfortunate Events
Welcome back to 100 Days of Trump where I recommend works to try to understand WTF happened in 2016 and how we can deal with Trump today. And what else can sum up the lat 18 months and likely the next 18 months to come than A Series of Unfortunate events. Just to be clear, I am not talking to the TV show or the movie, the movie is fine and I haven't seen the show, I am talking about the books here.
So there is a lot to recommend about Lemony Snicket’s fun at the expense of the english language, they are funny, they have great scenerios, they serve as a great Lit 101 work, and it has great meta commentary, but I want to talk about the theme of Count Olaf and the role of the adults. The thing is, Count Olaf isn’t just evil, he is a fucking idiot. His disguises are absolutely awful, he is horribly ignorant and unaware of basic concepts, he consistently undermines his own schemes by the fact he is easily tricked. If the world of SoUE was even slightly competent, Olaf would be in jail and no threat to anyone....but here is the thing, as stupid as Olaf is, the adults of this world are even stupider. SoUE is full of adult characters who are well meaning and kind, but are so fucking stupid that Count Olaf and company are able to trick their way past them with the bare minimum of effort, if any of them payed even the slightest bit of attention he would be caught by the adults are buying in way too much into the Just World Fallacy, the assumption that the world is a fundamentally fair place and that bad consequences must be the result of bad behavior, and so they ignore the children who are constantly saying “holy shit guys, its Count Olaf, fucking do something about it”. They don’t learn from experience, they value the rule of law without any understanding of its workings, and they view the siblings being impolite as equivalent to Olaf being a murderer....what i’m saying here is that the adults are the news media today. These people aren’t evil, they are just unbelievably stupid and are convinced they understand how the world works despite having an extremely small minded view of the world.
If you want a primer on gas lighting, normalization, the Golden Mean Fallacy, false Equivalence, the Just World Fallacy, and just all the little ways those whose job it is to defend us regularly fail no matter how well meaning, I recommend you giving this a look, it is a good primer of how to go on in a world which has not only gone mad, but is too stupid to notice.
