Day 56: driving North to Bay of Islands, NZ, where I rejoined Queen Mary 2.

With 155 Islands, the Bay of Islands is one of the most popular fishing, sailing and tourist destinations in New Zealand. The Bay of Islands was the first area in New Zealand to be settled by Europeans m. Whalers arrived towards the end of the 18th century, while the first missionaries settled in 1814. The Bay has many interesting historic towns including Paihia, Russell, Keri Keri and Waitangi, home of the famous historic treaty.

On the day we drove North of Auckland on our way to the Bay of Islands, and passing very close to the point on Earth which is furthest to my home town in South Spain (the antipodes). Next stop the moon 😜.

Once we arrived in Waitangi, we rejoined the ship which I had be missing. It was nice to come back to my safe small… 😅

As we left New Zealand in the evening on our way back to Australia to continue our world cruise, clouds formed and began to rain for a few minutes, quite a different scene to the one of our arrival to the country. New Zealand was crying for our departure.

Flash back to the evening when we chilled out in Russel (Bay of Islands) in New Zealand. After a walk up the hill to the panoramic view of the island, we ventured down the hill to the oldest pub in New Zealand and sipped on two local crisp pints.

Bay of Islands On our first full day up north, we explored two of the small towns in this area. Paihia was first and we enjoyed a lovely walk along the jagged rocks and the windy beach and then took a quick ferry over to the other side of the bay. This was where Russell was and we enjoyed a delicious lamb shank lunch and relaxing in the harbour watching the different types of boats. Also, we walked to Long Beach and enjoyed relaxing on the sand. We wanted to see more of the bay so we booked ourselves onto a sailing trip for the day after. We boarded Phantom, our sailing yacht, and set off into the beautiful ocean. We loved learning about how the boat worked and the scenery was stunning. During the day, we were dropped off at Cook's Island and we climbed up a peak to get an incredible view of the Bay of Islands with the lovely turquoise waters. We were really lucky with the weather and it was the perfect day for sailing!
