Rambling below cut

This comic took me 2 hrs more than it took me to platinum LAD:Gaiden lol...

anyway, this is a different style from the other comic I did mostly because it wasn't as complex subject matter. Instead of using a pencil brush I used a pen brush (making lines cleaner) and I used a different brush for shading (and also didn't blend as much).

I've thought more about these characters ever since I played Signalis; not because they are similar to the subject matter of Signalis, but because I was imagining a survival hide and seek game (like Clock Tower) with these characters because I had played Signalis. Does that make any sense? lmao

Anyway, I'll talk more abt char inspiration and stuff when I get to the specific post for Lanie (Rom probably won't be getting her own). I really should stick to posting the OCs now. I mentally committed to doing portraits for all my characters but I fear that may expose how boring my painting style is... ough... anyway...

Fancomic Entry

This comic was done for this contest. I had really loved this person's GyJo 80s AU for a longtime and had wanted to do their DTIYS before but just never could get it right... so when I saw this contest I resigned to do it as a comic a) because I like GyJo (one of the only Jojo ships that stuck with me), b) I was in college and thought the project would be good to occupy me and c) helped me explore drawing comics on Procreate.

Being one of my first comics in Procreate, I was still figuring out screentones (as I always am) and I couldn't even be assed to use the text function (though I've now come to understand Procreate text function is actually ridiculously easy compared to CSP). This comic is fine and I enjoyed doing it.

Ouium: Haircut

Here is another annual comic finished June 2023 this time. This was kinda special to me because I honestly hadn't drawn Ivor or Sasha this much for a long time, and it was like returning to old friends. I have developed a lot for these characters and intensely focused on them for a long time and resolved their story so conclusively that I didn't mentally entertain them for a long time T_T. So I really enjoyed this comic. I was also pretty light on myself with these 17 pages, but that was also because the subject matter didn't warrant much more. As for the subject matter, I had these thoughts about cutting hair because of my own hair. This was made in the summer after my high school graduation, so there was this sense of becoming a new person and I associated that with wanting to my cut hair (ironically, my hair is virtually the same and I did nothing major). This and a fanfiction I wrote for MuraIchi in the winter of 2022 were very introspective about my feelings of graduation and stuff. I also used this comic as a means to elaborate on Ivor's sister since even though I don't necessarily draw these two often anymore, I especially haven't really elaborated on Ivor's sister beyond mentions in synopses I've written. My writing certainly isn't subtle here. Anyway, I leave this post with my friend's immediate first impression upon looking at the first page of this comic: "the peopel in ur comics all look like they were just done fucking for 24238208302 hours before the comic begins"

Various Judolai (Jude+Nicolai) Comics

Compiling from newest to oldest because I am deathly embarrassed of previous Jude designs, as will be discussed. Alternative shipnames for this are QUEEN and Nude (Nicolai+Jude)

Most recent one page comic. Done to develop the style I'll use for the current comic I'm doing. Also, just a funny idea that appeared to me. These are their current designs. It'll be evident how much I changed them as the post goes on.

Again, current designs. I'm still figuring out how to do Nicolai's hair. It's funny, there was a point where I was satisfied with Nicolai's design but viscerally dissatisfied with Jude's design, but now it's the opposite case. Albeit, I'm good with Nicolai's design conceptually but I just can't execute it as I'd like. Also, both these comics entertain the idea that Jude is very violently devoted to protecting Nicolai, in a sort of yandere way. I've foregone any kind of shame and unabashedly admit I somewhat enjoy that sort of trait, the gap moe produced by a seemingly cutesy and pleasant character having the capacity for major violence. This shift in his character was inspired, and I speak completely truthfully, by Finland from Hetalia. I wish I was lying.

So at this point I hated what I originally had with Jude and redid it, but was never quite satisfied with the hairstyle. Nicolai is notably his old design. Also didn't translate the Japanese on the third image because it's probably wrong.

And now I reveal probably the oldest longform comic I did and also Jude's old design, which I hate a lot for reasons I'll explain after.

I get his hair might look weird and stuff, that isn't why I hate the design. Moreover, this was when I somehow pictured their narrative to be set in the medieval times, so his hair being so weird made sense (it doesn't but alright).

Anyway, I cringe about this Jude design not necessarily because it's bad, but more because of how it was me reflecting a digestible ideal of gay dudes where there's explicit feminine and masculine dynamics. It's just shallow. These dynamics aren't necessarily bad or anything, but the fact that I really did portray Jude so femininely and had narratives about it just kinda weirds current-me out. I was young and didn't really see it that way, but now I realize how sort of embarrassing it is. I honestly feel embarrassed even posting these T_T but I mean who will see it, it doesn't matter. Ultimately it's more emblematic of my own youth, so in a way I should appreciate this design, even if I will never draw it again.

Yeah, the tangents will only get worse with every post. Conclusion: I am happy with current Jude's design after I have wrangled with it for years. Nicolai, that's a work in progress, but he's close.

Well... this is done.... I didn't check, but this style definitely felt more time efficient. I'm not really satisfied with how this came out, but I'm glad it's done. I'm not sure when I'd draw the continuation, and, regardless, it's probably best to do non-comic art for a good bit...

I'm generally satisfied with this comic. Even though I bemoaned the 288 hour work cycle on this, that was actually below my estimations, so I'm also happy with that. I think the art is more consistent in this one than in previous comic where extreme dips happen and I also think that, while there is a lot of writing here, it's relevant to characters and not exactly fluff. I'm also slightly taken aback by the difference in my art after only 1 year.

Forgive some bad art ahead, but something interesting to share is that the scene with Fuu and Hermes has been in my mind for going on 5 years now. It's changed slightly here and there, but ultimately the most consistent thing has been Hermes nuzzling into Fuu's shoulder, where their scar is. It's a thing she does often, for reasons. Of all the pages, I think that pose is the one that was the most distinct in my mind because I had dwelled on it for so long.

This was the comic I mentioned I started in this post. As mentioned there, the shading style used here is a development of that shading style. However, after ~288hours, I can say that this is not an efficient style at all. Especially in this comic, where I was particularly conscious of lighting and such and did not really rely on established values but would develop the values as I needed in that moment. I think it makes for a more solid looking comic in terms of shadows and such, but at a certain point it feels overdone?

The ever-torturing ideal of screentones seems so much more reasonable to try and get down than doing this cell-shaded style again. I do enjoy the style itself, and already employed it in other recent drawings, but it is seriously inefficient for anything long form. Granted, I'm the one who would overdo it, so I only have myself to blame.

I'll talk more about the comic in the next post.

Aidil Comic

it has been a while.. I finished this comic around 2 months ago but have been delaying posting it because I don't really like the last page so much.. I made it when I was extremely sick and something about it will always bother me. I could redraw it, but that would just take more time. I fear Aidil will be another character who I will always struggle to capture as I imagine him. This was my first foray into the current shading style that I committed to (maybe imprudently) for ANOTHER comic I'm working on. Yeah.... uh..... yeah... I've already done 5 pages and it's taking me embarrassingly long. For that reason I'll probably only do OC portraits when I feel like it. I really just want to finish archiving everything atp
