BBC National Orchestra of Wales: SUMMIT BLUE
Today was the first rehearsal of my new piece SUMMIT BLUE written for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales - the project is supported by Ty Cerdd, Vale of Glamorgan Festival and Welsh Music Guild.
SUMMIT BLUE is based on a poem by the Welsh language poet Dafydd ap Gwilym - his work To The Stars is a poignant reflection with views of the majestic Welsh landscape. I was inspired by his rich language to reflect the crystalline images created in the poem; sharp string pizzicato accent flowing clarinet solo passages, glinting percussion highlight rich horn outbursts with flashes of sunlight from the flutes.
It was a pleasure to work with conductor B. Tommy Andersson and composers Tansy Davies and Huw Watkins in BBC Hoddinott Hall - working with these huge figures in contemporary music was absolutely incredible, and I learned so much from their wide ranging insights.
The next rehearsal is on Monday 18th February with a final concert on the 19th in the Wales Millennium Centre.
