Filling in more missing history from my education, so let's talk about Fall of the Shah from @bbcworldservice . The Fall of the Shah is a dramatized history podcast about the fall of the Shah of Iran in 1979 and the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini. While my existing history knowledge was like, "Shah fell, Khomeini came to power, state run by religious zealots", there's (of course) so much more to it than that. Told from varying perspectives, a normal Iranian family torn by political upheaval, US President Carter and the cabinet, the Shah and his household, people around Khomeini, it's a very well put together tale, solid casting, story, and sound, it truly is an immersive story. I learned a lot from the Fall of the Shah, and you can too! If you like the 1865 podcast, world history, and solidly done historical dramas, then Fall of the Shah is for you!

Fresh in the last few months, let's talk about A Wish for Afghanistan from the BBC World Service (@bbcworldservice ) by Lyse Doucet (@lysedoucet).

When the US withdrew from Afghanistan and their government crumbled and seized by the Taliban, I was shocked and dismayed that things fell apart so quickly. I knew just a little about the history of the country, the invasion by the Russians and others over time, the Afghanis who have fled the violence and returned over time, the complex history of the Taliban and the US’s involvement, in turn providing guns, and fighting against them. I wanted to know, what have we done, where is the country now, and what are Afghanis thinking at this moment in time?

Well, Lyse Doucet and the BBC are here to help. Lyse has worked as a journalist and BBC correspondent in the country since 1989, and has the connections to speak with Afghani leaders, politicians, and Afghanis of all stripes to give a picture of both hope and fear, progress and heartbreak. Lyse does an exceptional job of threading the needle between asking hard questions and patiently listening to draw out discussions with her guests. Not all questions about Afghanistan are answerable right now, some, time will tell, others we may never know, but A Wish for Afghanistan will give you a deeper understanding, and a pathos for the people. A heartbreaking reminder of our shared humanity, and how refugees don’t leave their countries because they don’t love their countries, they long for home, just as you and I would. This show may make you cry.
