1. favourite place in your country? – sagada!! my dad’s side of the family is from the mountain province and back when we lived in the philippines, we would always spend summers there! i have so many memories of us going up to the mountains for easter. my grandparents’ house has this huge, amazing backyard (the house itself is tucked into the mountains and high enough that sometimes when you’re on the terrace you can literally touch clouds) with orange trees which was perfect for easter egg hunting!

11. favourite native writer/poet? – okay this feels a bit of a copout but one of the first pieces of filipino literature i ever read was josé rizal’s noli mi tángere, on my mum’s insistence because the schools i went to never really focused on filipino writers, just american ones (hooray, imperialism), so by virtue of that and of rizal being a national hero, he’s definitely on the list. ninotchka rosca and ruth mabanglo are also really important to me, although i didn’t hear of them until university.

12. what do you think about english translations of your favourite native prose/poem? – ooooo i’ve actually never read ruth mabanglo in english; i’ve never really… bothered, if that makes sense? tagalog is my mother tongue and even if i translated something into english, i feel like it becomes only half as powerful. the first poem of hers i ever read was one called huwag naman (apela ng mga pilipino kay tiyo samuel), which translates to something like ‘please don’t! (filipino pleas to uncle sam)’, from a collection that’s called anyaya ng imperyalista (‘the invitation of the imperialist’): to translate that into english would just. idk. almost feel like a betrayal, sort of? so for stuff like that, i’d almost prefer they weren’t translated into english. but when i see english translations of other stuff, it’s generally okay with me.

17. favourite poem? this feels like a very tumblr copout, but anything in richard siken’s crush, particularly ‘snow and dirty rain’; that slim little volume got me through so, so many low spots. i also love rilke’s sonnets to orpheus – my dad got me a dual-language german/english copy and it’s one of my most treasured possessions.

21. what is your favourite drink? any fruity tea!! (or alcohol-wise, a rum drink will do LOL)

25. what inspires you? oh man this is so cheesy but art, whether it’s painting or architecture or prints or anything!! and also the idea of working hard to get somewhere so that i can be in a position to give + give back!
