Ah, so the singer is filling in the void of their perceived inadequacy with admiration for another person, but are so focused on their praise of the renowned figure that their image of themselves is diminished, even accrediting what they do achieve on their own merits to the influence of the figure. As if they're trying to wallpaper the parts of themselves they don't like with the parts of another person they do like.
