The ground below her feet shifted. What before was comfortably rock solid began to twist and turn itself into wet soil. Each step, she felt the heel of her boots sinking deeper into the dark dirt. Around her, the concrete jungle morphed into hallowed trees as her fingers bleed from gripping onto their branches harshly. Even with her heels sinking, she began to run, lost in her own nightmare. As she turned a corner, the homeless man sleeping silently grew the face of her mother. Katherine spat, falling back against the wall. “Mother, no!” her voice cried, digging her nails into the pavement that fooled her eyes. “Stay back, god dammit.”
“Lesson one,” Elijah slowly walked up behind, a smile curling to line of his lips. “Never let down your guard.”
