it was only a gene how did it end up like this

... dendra h. nagendra huh. so, the gene she's talking about is the metahuman gene, which causes superpowers- in a non controlled environment, they only show up in people with very distant monster genes, or after spending enough time near a decaying entity but you don't end up with psychic powers outright, just the potential of them and then boom you have this gene- which is different from having actual psychic powers, but nowadays being psychic fall under the metahuman umbrella. They usually only get unlocked during high stress environments and don't mutate the human body into extremes.

and then SOMEONE did experiments with people with the metahuman gene, but ultimately left them alone but did manage a way to give non metahumans the gene, and then DENDRA managed to get her hands on the research with her medical/biotech company The Iris Institute, and basically engineered a much more... extreme version of the gene that can give people mutation based powers on people who already had it, and then she gave it people who DIDN'T have it, and herself. She also experimented on monsters to figure out if she can make 'natural magic production' a gene for humans...
