I feel like no one is mentioning that Bear's actor looks like a brother to AJ Soprano's actor?? Am i crazy??
I think my biggest gripe with Obsession, which was sprouted fom people commenting on the mean-spiritedness of it, is that the audience can kind of tell that the writer thinks this is kind of funny. It feels like it's almost supposed to be funny. But the humor is at the expense of Bear, and it's created from his victim acting out&and his and other people's reactions. Like you can argue that those scenes are supposed to scare you, but it feels baked into the script that Bear's victim is a monster, a joke, and an afterthought, in that order.
(I would argue that Man Vs. Bear and Nikki "Freeman" being baked into the movie adds to this. The torture of Nikki is not given the weight it deserves; it's given levity. I don't know, as an audience member it made me feel like there was a lack of care around victims in general.)
I find it interesting that the excuse both Bear and entity!Nikki use for her behavior is about something related to her father.
Everyone in the friend group is aware that she doesn't get along with him but suddenly the whole reason behind her behavior and the reason she's crazy is her dad.
Idk if I worded it correctly but it's interesting to me cuz a lot women's behavior is often blamed on the bad or lack of a relationship with their fathers
# how it started vs how its going
OBSESSION (2026) + michael johnston as bear
Y’all thought you knew Michael Johnston from Obsession
I saw the trailer when it was first teased and yelled, “IS THAT COREY BRYANT?!?!”
Copied from my letterboxd review of Obsession
This is the most profoundly uncomfortable and horrified i have felt within my life. No other piece of media has ever made me feel this way. I spent 5 minutes after the film ended sat in shock. Both what Bear and Nicky experience is what I imagine my hell to be like. I have completely reevaluated my ideas about perhaps ever having a relationship. I am not the same person who sat down to watch Obsession
He was whining because she didn't love him and then he was whining because she loved him too much. Bro pick a struggle. 😭
