#33 매우 짧은 길이를 나타내는 단위, Beard-second
While waiting for MSPA to be not crashed, I am currently doing one of my favorite hobbies: useless math with obscure units. In nuclear physics, there is a unit called a shake. One shake is 10 nanoseconds, and is derived from the expression "two shakes of a lamb's tail". Another unit I found humorous was the beard-second. The beard-second is approximately the time an average beard grows in 1 second, and is equal to 10 nanometers. Therefore, if we put them together, and do some simplification, we can conclude that 1 beard-second/shake is equal to 1 meter per second. I think we can all agree that the beard-second/shake is a much better unit than m/s.
I think I should start using the beard-second to measure length more often.
How tall are you? - About 170,180,000 beard-seconds.
Standard Measures
Wilson here. Mr. Struggan just read this humor piece by David Lance Goines about Helen of Troy and the idea that a standard measure for beauty can be derived from Homer's Illiad, where 1 Helen = Beauty sufficient enough to launch 1,000 ships (1 milliHelen = launching capability for 1 ship).
This led Mr. Struggan to Wikipedia, where he found a List of Humorous Units of Measure, from which he instructed me to share a few of his favorites:
1 beard-second = the length the average beard grows in one second (empirically measured at 5 - 10 nanometers)
1 donkeypower = 250 watts (about one third of 1 horsepower)
1 Warhol = 15 minutes of fame (derived from Andy Warhol's thoughts on the subject. 1 kiloWarhol = 10.42 days of fame; 1megaWarhol = 28.5 years of fame)
Tongue-in-cheek though these are, Mr. Struggan always seriously appreciates an attempt to quantify or qualify the unquantifiable or unqualifiable and look at things from a new direction. The human spirit is asymptotic to the truth, so take your standards with a grain of salt.
Mr. Struggan sends his regards.
Beard-second
The beard-second is a unit of length inspired by the light-year, but used for extremely short distances such as those in nuclear physics. The beard-second is defined as the length an average beard grows in one second. Kemp Bennet Kolb defines the distance as exactly 100 angstroms,[3] (i.e. 10 nanometers) while Nordling and Österman's Physics Handbook has it half the size at 5 nanometers.[4]Google Calculator supports the beard-second for unit conversions using the latter conversion factor.[5]
