Who is your absolute fave in Hakuoki? ^^
I could be given all the time in the world and still not be able to choose one, and not explain myself. You have invited an essay unto everyone’s dash this fine day, and I thank you for the opportunity.
BUT IF I MUST, I can at least do my top 3… all of which I love the exact same amount as each other and can never choose a favourite between them, and are thus in not a particular order.
As if the username wasn’t obvious enough.
The complexity of his emotional contstruction is AWESOME. He’s not a “oh look at me I’m a demon and I’m better than everyone” guy like Kazama. He does a lot of things with a good intent, though the delivery comes across as douchey, but I think that’s an emotional protection thing. Like his way to keep his distance from humans because he knows they live a considerably shorter lifespan than demons. AND. INVITES CHIZURU TO LIVE IN HIS VILLAGE WITH HIM MULTIPLE TIMES. And his dedication to see through the will of his passed friend, Takasugi Shinsaku, a human, is really moving to me. He doesn’t have to, he has no obligation to stay by his friend’s side, and even after he passes he accepts he has a camaraderie just as valued with Harada. Part of me likes the fact that he doesn’t have route (THOUGH I WOULD LOVE ONE) because it leaves so much to the imagination about what his backstory might be, what goes on in his head, it’s all left as a mystery to us to uncover ourselves.
Buff, yet gentle and friendly. A BFG, if you will. He wants peace, he only wishes for the best whom are close to his heart, and has clearly gone through personal things that have shaped the character he is. His confidence is inspiring and, to me, very pleasing to the eye. I honestly find him as such a relatable character and find that his thought processes are similar to my own. Though many say he’s too much like a big brother, I find that Shinpachi is more the big brother type, personally. Having Harada as a friend or a romantic partner would be perfect either way– I love both of these dimensions of him.
LITTLE BALL OF SUNSHINE THAT MUST BE PROTECTED. I LOVE his energy, how outgoing he is, and also find him as relatable as Harada is. Feeling like he’s full of regrets and always making the wrong decision on a whim in the pressures of a fleeting conflict, his journey is all about rediscovering the confidence in himself and being okay with the things he must decide. It’s so interesting to see how his past affects his present-- the fact that he is an illigitimate child and believes himself to be a mistake surely contributes to the fact that he feels as though all he makes are mistakes and regrets. Again, very relatable, and a great personal development to witness during his routes.
I also love Ryouma, but this post could go on and on and on, and I’m sure no one wants to that lmao.
SO yeah, there’s my top three. Cheers for asking, anon! ^^
