Beast Chuuya’s grief should be talked about more.

In BSD Beast, through calculated manipulation and ultimate self-sacrifice, Dazai rewrites reality to ensure a happy ending, not for himself, but for others, well, mostly for Oda. Odasaku is allowed to live and write his novels, free of the violence that once consumed him. Even Akutagawa and Atsushi, two broken boys shaped by opposing ideologies, are granted a form of peace. Yet, amidst this manufactured tranquility, one man bears the full weight of Dazai’s absence: Chuuya Nakahara.

Though Dazai arranged for Chuuya to become the next Boss of the Port Mafia, a move that gave Chuuya power and autonomy, it did nothing to heal the emotional damage left behind. For Chuuya, Dazai's death was not a noble sacrifice; it was a betrayal. He had given Dazai everything, his trust, loyalty, and the quiet promise that, one day, he would be the one to kill him, that'd end up being true or not, he could use the promise to protect Dazai from others. That was their unspoken bond, a thread of tension and understanding that held meaning in a world where words often failed. When Dazai died without a farewell, that thread snapped. What was left in its place was anger, confusion, and a grief so immense it nearly tore Yokohama apart.

Chuuya’s heartbreak manifests not in tears, but in destruction. Upon seeing Dazai’s corpse, he immediately unleashes Corruption, not to fight an enemy, but in an uncontrollable storm of rage and despair. It takes several ability users to subdue him, a testament not only to his power, but to how deeply he had been wounded. When the fury burns out, it leaves a hollow shell behind. Chuuya, once the Mafia’s strongest weapon, is reduced to a man broken by betrayal.

Meanwhile, others who were close to Dazai mourn him differently. Atsushi and Akutagawa are affected by his death, but their pain is tempered by closure. There are no lingering promises or deep personal debts between them and Dazai, nothing unresolved that might corrode into resentment. Their loss is real, but it doesn't destroy them.

Beast Chuuya, however, is not afforded that peace. The relationship he shared with Dazai was messy, intimate, and defined by the things left unsaid. In death, those silences become unbearable.

In the end, Chuuya is locked away, yet even that containment cannot hold his vengeance. Blaming the Armed Detective Agency for Dazai’s death, he begins plotting their destruction. His grief becomes a weapon, sharpened by betrayal and boundless loyalty.

“Erase the detective agency from the phone directory. From the map also.”

“If the organisation that caused the previous boss’ death is to operate like nothing happens, it will cost the Mafia its face.”

Chuuya in these lines is being honest and at the same time putting up a facade to hide his grief.

While BEAST closes its curtain on a seemingly balanced world, it leaves behind one gaping wound in Chuuya, a reminder that even in a rewritten reality, not all pain can be erased.

When they say friendship can’t be all consuming and profound, but Beast!Dazai literally rewrote his universe/fate, sacrifised his (and some other people’s) happiness and his life, literally made himself be hated by Odasaku, just so he could live and be able to write the novel he wanted, and when Oda pulled that “Don’t call me Odasaku”+ gun on him, he legit looked like a piece of his soul was being violently torn apart

Nothing in the BSD franchise will ever be as meaningful to me than the scene in which BEAST! Oda pulls a gun on BEAST! Dazai and tells him he can’t forgive him because of what he put Akutagawa through.

Do you ever think about how in beast Dazai manipulated Gin into believing that Akutagawa only cared about himself and his revenge? How beast Dazai used both the Akutagawa siblings? How beast Dazai fed into Gin's resentment towards her brother for abandoning her, how he exploited Akutagawa's grief and pain to dehumanize him? Called him a mindless beast for going on an rampage mode and killing the thugs in the cost of his own life and sister, completely dismissing the fact that he was still a child who never got the opportunity to learn how to express himself in no other way but destruction, completely dismissing the fact that he had just seen his family whom he wanted nothing but to protect, die Infront of him? Akutagawa himself says that hell would've been kinder.

But he did abandon Gin. And Gin has the right to hold grudge against her brother for it.

But who is Dazai to manipulate that grudge against akutagawa?

He sent akutagawa a msg first saying he'd kill Gin. Then akutagawa rampages into the PM. Takes kyouka hostage and uses Atsushi to get closer to dazai and gin. But then they had an argument where Atsu mocks aku. Tells him that his violence comes from selfishness. That he's so selfish he'd take a little girl hostage.

The little girl, kyouka was trying to kill him.

And did Akutagawa actually do it for the selfishness of his heart?

Or because he wanted to reunite with his sister?

Everyone around him calls him selfish. Even Gin. It's true that Akutagawa, in his own rage completely dismissed him and abandoned her for revenge.

But was it because he was selfish? Or because he was grieving for  his fallen friends? Those whose lives were taken like they never mattered to this universe? That their lives were so disposable?

They call Akutagawa selfish, a kid in the slum who despite struggling himself takes other children under his wings to save them from the exploitation and trafficking. He kills all the dogs around the slum because one of them ripped his friend apart. He remembers that friend who died in the cold.

Gin calls her brother selfish, not knowing all these years he only lived to bring her back to him. That his guilt for abandoning her was so strong he was suicidal. That he wanted to kill himself.

"I told Oda sepai once, that there were two people I wanted to kill. One was the man in black and the other is.... Ryunosuke Akutagawa"

The entirety of beast, what Akutagawa has done was for others. He killed for his friends. He lived for his sister.

He's so painfully human but is constantly told how evil he is. How he's a mindless beast. Even though all he was a child forced to grow up in violence. Forced to see how his and his friend's lives were always disposable.

He didn't need the so called tough lesson beast Dazai wanted to "teach" him. All he needed was someone to believe in him. To rely on him. To say that he was not evil.

The only people who understood him, who actually saw the humanity in him were Oda and Kunikida. Not even his own sister. Whom I do not blame. She was also a child who saw her friends die and later saw her brother leaving her behind. She was also manipulated by Dazai who always destroys everything.

That's why when Oda confronts Dazai about Akutagawa, it's such a strong moment. He's telling Dazai that no matter what your intention was, it will never justify what you did to Akutagawa. No matter how much you think you did the right thing all you did was manipulated and sacrificed children who were grieving for your sinister plan. You pitted those tragic siblings against each other even though you clearly knew how much they both love each other.

That's why Oda pointing his gun at Dazai and refusing to acknowledge him as a friend is such a slap on his face. Even the master demon prodigy wouldn't have thought about the consequences of his actions.

Oda refusing to call Dazai a friend is the ultimate justice that anyone in this series would've given Akutagawa. He poured cold water on Dazai's every effort, on Dazai's every abuse he put the akutagawa siblings through. Because no matter what he did, he will never be forgiven for what he did to them. The ultimate karma he deserved.

Yeah my opinion might be biased. I hate Dazai after all. And I will always cheer seeing that iconic panel of Oda pointing his gun at Dazai.
