Connie went straight from this (The Passing of the Third Floor Back) into the most strikingly different type of part imaginable–that of the revolutionary Convict 83 in King of the Damned. There was no interval between the pictures. In fact, The Passing of The Third Floor Back was still “on the floor” when King of the Damned started, and Connie switched from his saintly role of “The Stranger” into the tattered convict overnight. They were shooting the boarding-house scene at the end of The Third Floor Back, after “The Stranger” had gone, while Connie was working on an adjoining set as the convict. Beatrix Lehmann had a line: “We’ll go and find him!” And she had to stride over to a door and open it. Everything was ready. Miss Lehmann spoke her line and flung open the door. And there stood Connie in his rags and tatters, as Convict 83. “Here I am, darleeng!” he exclaimed. He had crept in from the other set without being seen.
