Iron fist in a velvet glove - 2019 Chateau De Beaucastel Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Rouge opened today at Cork Fine Wine in Calgary. - Nose initially reticent but opens to black olive tapenade, blackberry reduction, lavender and freshly brewed espresso. Initial attack soft but explodes on the mid and finish with a melange of black berry, dark chocolate and herbal spices that finishes for minutes. Acidity is on point and it is surprising how approachable this classical scored vintage is in its relative youth. A masterpiece that will only improve in the cellar over the next 30 years.

This is my all-time favorite Beaucastel. And this phenomenon of preferring a *lesser* wine is something which–although bling-bro will shake his heads in disgust–happens frequently with me, and I have observed it throughout the ranks of the wine 1% too many times to count.
