Domaine de Beaucastel
Studio Mediterranee In collaboration with STUDIO MUMBAI
Happy birthday to me! Every year, I invite people to send me Domaine du Pegau, Beaucastel, or anything else they’d like to donate to the cause...donations still being accepted! ;)
Thanks for another awesome year!

Iron fist in a velvet glove - 2019 Chateau De Beaucastel Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Rouge opened today at Cork Fine Wine in Calgary. - Nose initially reticent but opens to black olive tapenade, blackberry reduction, lavender and freshly brewed espresso. Initial attack soft but explodes on the mid and finish with a melange of black berry, dark chocolate and herbal spices that finishes for minutes. Acidity is on point and it is surprising how approachable this classical scored vintage is in its relative youth. A masterpiece that will only improve in the cellar over the next 30 years.
Syrah Heaven
Powerful, sharp, amazingly textured while contrastingly pointed, this continues to be one of my favorite Syrahs in Paso. Not as well-distributed as their Rhone blends–or as boring–seek out these single-varieties whenever possible. Black, thick crimson in the glass, not a trace of brick here at 9. Wildly savory nose dripping with ripe fruit: the herbaceous aspects sullied with earth, the fruit…

Cornas/Cornuds... whatever
Cornas/Cornuds… whatever
Holy crap is this a powerful wine. I can’t believe it is half the price of Coudoulet–my favorite wine of theirs and ALREADY a ridiculous bargain compared to Beaucastel. But the Syrah really sings here–none of that Grenache-delusions-of-grandeur nonsense. Allegedly the northern-most vineyard in Southern Rhone: a marked nod to its pure Syrah power. The blackest, darkest, purplest, blue-rimmed wine…

I am Pinot--Watch me ROAR
I am Pinot–Watch me ROAR
An odd addition to Delmore’s curt line-up of traditional cool-climate, harsh-as-a-cat’s-tongue Pinot and Syrah, I tasted it at a winemaker luncheon and couldn’t resist a couple bottles. Probably sold out by now, but check for sure. 2020–just a few months old, practically a nouveau, definitely some carbonic and fresh as a daisy. Light purple, thinning to maroon-pink at the wide edge. Carbonic…

Cotes du Beaucastel
This is my all-time favorite Beaucastel. And this phenomenon of preferring a *lesser* wine is something which–although bling-bro will shake his heads in disgust–happens frequently with me, and I have observed it throughout the ranks of the wine 1% too many times to count. It is honestly a great litmus for spotting the 1%. My favorite Ridge is the estate cab. My favorite Muga is Prado Enea. Almost…

Baby you so fine
I tasted this wine for the first time last year at Hospice Du Rhone … I literally had had all the other Beaucastels but somehow had never had this *baby beaucastel* Coudoulet. Across the street and around the corner and all young vines, everything else is identical and 40/20/30/10 GR/MV/SY/CT? (that’s from memory, so….) I fell in love immediately and this is the second time I have had it since.…
