Well, those were the consequences, right there.
If Mofftiss really do have to marry John off, I would be ok with it if it follows a situation where John gets married a few months or a year or so before Sherlock comes back, and when he does return John is just thinking to himself, "You should have gotten here a few months earlier. I've made a terrible mistake."
And maybe Sherlock is crestfallen when he finds out John is married too because he'd just assumed that John would wait for him and come running back to him and it'd be business as usual in no time. He'd never have imagined that John would go off and get married to someone else.
