The Nitty Gritty: Today, June 16, marks the two-year anniversary of pop-punk / easycore band Boymeetsworld’s debut LP, Become Someone. I came across this LP a few months ago at my local Salvation Army store. I went in there, just for kicks, because you never know what you’ll find in there. I’ve made some great discoveries in thrift shops like that, and when I saw a copy of it, I was pretty intrigued by it. Not to mention, the album was signed, too, which was pretty cool. I looked them up, because I had never heard of them before, but I felt like Boymeetsworld was a pop-rock / pop-punk band of some kind. Sure enough, I was right, and I decided to check it out. I spent some time with the album before I decided that I should get more into it during the summertime. Well, it’s the summertime now, and I wanted to give this LP a quick review. Why will it be quick? This LP falls into the simple category that many albums do – it’s generic but perfectly executed. Yeah, this LP is generic as all hell, and if you’re a fan of modern pop-punk, you’ll love this LP. If you’re not, but you just haven’t heard the right band to get you into the genre, this could be a good record. These guys have killer hooks, a solid vocalist, some great instrumentation that’s very bouncy, energetic, and upbeat, and lyrics that are very interesting, well-written, and unique, ultimately standing out from the typical pop-punk crowd. These guys aren’t unique, musically speaking, but it’s clear they put a lot of time and effort into their music, so I really enjoy their stuff. Become Someone is one hell of an album, and if you’re into pop-punk / easycore, it’s totally worth a listen.

Would I recommend this? Oh, yes, I would. Like I just said, this LP won’t necessarily win over people that hate pop-punk, since it’s pretty clichéd, at least in terms of its music, but the lyrics are rather well-written and interesting. What I also said, too, is that I’d recommend this to people that haven’t found the right album to get them into the genre, because this one might do it for you. Their sound is very tight-knit, energetic, and well-done. These guys aren’t anything amazing, make no mistake, but they do what they do well. I’ve always said that I can look past generic bands if they do what they do well, or they go above and beyond with their generic sound. Boymeetsworld almost does, but they’re not quite the same level as Broadside. I would say that Boymeetsworld’s sound is pretty uneven, as they don’t know whether they want to be an easycore or pop-punk band, but both sides of their sound are done well, regardless, so it’s not like it’s hard to get into. They’re just a bit unfocused as a band, for better or worse. I would still recommend this LP, though, because they’re really good. Here’s hoping that we’ll get something more from them soon, because they’re one of the most promising bands in the scene that I’ve heard in awhile.
