I JUST WANT TO TALK A LOT ABOUT MY WEIRD HALF-FORMED MODERN MYTHOLOGY THINGAMABOB so I’m throwing it under a cut read if you like
okay so basically the really vague loose plot going on is that people are being imbued with the spirits of the gods. I’m still not a hundred percent sure how and why this is happening, which I know I totally need to work on. I think the muses are distributing the power. I think that for ~~reasons~~ probably having to do with modern advancement etc the gods retired and gave their power to the muses. They decided it was better for mortals to manage things for a time, and to pass on the powers when one person died or abused their position.
The conflict is that some cultures have very bloody, crazy, aggressive gods. One Muse was placed in charge of guarding these powers, keeping them safe and locked away from the mortal world. for ~~reasons~~ this muse decides to start distributing them. Maybe she’s fed up with the way the world is turning to chaos, and decides a little more destruction will speed things along and bring the whole of creation to ruin, and maybe the immortals will start fresh with something better.
Anyway, our hero is the newest bearer of the spirit of Hades. She’s a geeky college junior named Val. She’s a nursing major, and her dream job is in Hospice. She feels like they deserve to be helped and cared for even when they are beyond hope for a cure. A muse masquerading as the internship coordinator at her college sees her true concern and care for the dead and decides she’ll do nicely as the next Hades-bearer. The power descends on her the first time she sees someone die.
I’m still figuring out what other spirit-bearers we’ll run into, but obviously Persephone will be one because~~reasons~~ and Oh golly I need to do so much research on mythology, both Greek and other cultures, so I have good background for this stuff but MAN ALIVE FOR SOME REASON THIS IDEA IS REALLY INTERESTING TO ME
Also the working title is “Becoming Death” so yeah
