Thoughts from my Buffy rewatch 2x21

Oh, Whistler narration. Whistler is the weak link in these episodes. A convenient plot-device character. Transparent, convenient plot-device characters are a very Whedon thing to do. 

I wonder if these period costumes are anywhere close to accurate?

I never get accustomed to David Boreanaz’s Irish accent. 

Omg the MUSIC when we jump back to the present day! It just Ramps. Up. The. Tension!

Giles has known expertise. He is a known academic. And he works in a high school library.

Omg I love the lunchroom scene. The fishstick pantomime, Willow on Oz’s lap. The group dynamic. I love them all so much. 

The scene at the mansion when they find out about the obelisk, the end of that scene, the way Drusilla sways her head and snaps the air and the music… it’s  s o   g o o d

The library scene where they argue about the spell… kill me. The way Willow  l o o k s  at Xander after his “so you can get your boyfriend back” spiel. Like she’s never really seen him before. It’s great. 

But going back to what I said about “The Harvest”… wouldn’t this scene have been better if it was obvious that Xander had never gotten over his best friend being murdered and turned into a vampire, rather than him just being jealous of Angel?

How much do I love Spike right now? A lot. 

Angel, “Acathala turned to stone, as demons sometimes do.” Do they Angel? Is that what they do?

Did this poor dude *have* to be shirtless for this ritual or did they just wanna toss a pinch of homoeroticism in there?

“Nobody understands me, that’s my curse.” Wow, an *unavoidably* cryptic demon. What a convenient character.

“She must be prettier than the last Slayer.” exCUSE ME. Fuck you Whistler. And Joss Whedon.

Spike, “Someone wasn’t worthy.” ily

“We’ll have our Armageddon, I swear!” Angel is SO angry and then he fucking THROWS a VASE like a BABY.

“I can take care of myself.” Love that callback to the premiere. A repetition with a difference. In “When She Was Bad” Buffy was being defensive, “I can take care of myself” was a mantra she told herself, to protect herself. Now she doesn’t want anyone else to get hurt. But the outcome is the same.

Gawd this last sequence, I feel tense remembering it as I type. The library fight, things going from bad to worse, everyone fighting their best and getting beaten anyways. 

“And you fall for it every time!” And the way the camera pushes right past Angel, giving us momentum, driving us towards the conclusion. 

One sore point: Drusilla looks a bit funny in a fight. Drusilla vs. Kendra should have been a lot more epic than it was. 

And then the slow-motion starts, and the music and the  F E E L I N G S  and “It’s what you do after that counts” <3 <3 <3
