in my experience ppl here call it castellano more than español

Fwiw in the Philippines Spanish is "Kastila" for both the language and the people)

Though it should be noted that Spanish was only ever widely spoken among the social elite, even during the occupation!

2. i might be biased in my perception of spain cause i noticed that in barcelona especially ppl seemed to use castellano but it’s interesting that it’s the same in madrid!

there's actually a phrase in academia "publish or perish"... since apparently that's the standard for determining ~~~academic talent~ the amount you've published is a big factor in promotions/getting tenure

heh i was aware of that standard but i didn’t know that catchy little phrase. it’s not even that it’s... bad to promote the expansion of knowledge but wow wow the way to expand knowledge and ideas isn’t just to publish more

you shouldn't fret over this at all. either you'll find your style/subculture in time, or you won't, the main thing is to be open about everything, which you certainly seem to be.

ecuador was the same way and honestly i’m okay with that trade off every time!

oh man that is a tough call. idid a high school service trip to Quito and looooved it! it's beautiful and there's great hiking. would u be going just for one semester?

oooh tell me more about your trip! how long were you there? where/how did you stay?

ya, i’d be going for just the spring semester. academically i plan to do not much of anything actually important abroad and i don’t have the schedule room to do that more than one semester!
