The first few months were the hardest for both of them to get through and it’s during this time the first stage of grief, denial, is prevalent above anything else.
After the first night apart, Kagome is near inconsolable and Inuyasha is nowhere to be found - he doesn’t want his friends to witness his breakdown
Soon, however, the countless nights of tears and refusing to believe it’s real turns into a strange numbness that lasts for a while, but it isn’t long until it changes into rage
Inuyasha clears entire sections of forest as he screams to any God that will listen, blaming them for taking her away from him, bellowing that it’s not fair, haven’t they put him through enough shit already? Why did they have to take away the one person that made his life worth living, goddammit?!
Kagome destroyed her bedroom once while her family was away, throwing things, screaming about the unfairness, blaming the jewel, Naraku, even Midoriko for forcing her to be separated from the man she loved
Anger eventually gives way to bargaining, both of them pleading, vowing they would do anything if only to see the other again, inhale her scent, savor his warmth, listen to him call her “wench” and for her to say “sit.”
The depression stage was the hardest, not only for them, but for their friends and Kagome’s family as well.
Kagome went days without speaking a word, even at school
Inuyasha would disappear for days on end and come back dirty, bloody and silent
Sometimes Kagome would lock herself in her room and avoid everyone
Inuyasha would sit in Kaede’s hut and not move an inch
It wasn’t until a full year passed that acceptance finally began to settle in, much to the relief of Kagome’s family and Miroku, Sango, Shippou and Kaede
On top of going to the well every three days, Inuyasha also spends entire nights sitting outside of it because it makes him feel a little closer to her
Kagome in turn spends nights inside the well house on days she’s missing him more than usual
Kagome is suddenly buying anything dog related when she happens to it it while shopping and her favorite color changes to red
Inuyasha often goes though Kagome’s yellow bag that was left behind
Inuyasha and Kagome both spend his human night at the well and talk to each other because instinctively, they know the other is there
Inuyasha often can be found within the boughs of Goshinboku
Likewise one of Kagome’s favorite spots is at the base, the spot where she’d first realized she loved him
The morning of her graduation, when she woke up, she smiled because there was an odd sort of peace flowing through her that had nothing to do with graduating that day
On the day of her return, Inuyasha was on edge the entire day, more snappish than usual, and when questioned what was wrong with him, he was unable to give a reason why
