"Disciples are often more extreme than their master" (to paraphrase from the introduction to the book I'm reading, What Is Art by Leo Tolstoi). This is like the truthiest truth. And a challenge: how to not? As a Christian, how do you do discipleship without doing that (which unfortunately so many Christians do, to the point that it has pretty much become the definition of a Christian, all the bigotry and hate that so goes against Jesus' whole thing)? But it applies even in non-religious contexts. I imagine Marx and Lenin did not intend Stalin and Mao to happen the way they did; feminism (while lacking a clear "master" in this phrase) also has this issue with extreme interpretations that spectacularly miss the mark.
