Hi! I have a question, so I saw someone on TikTok with a pet porcupine fish that they were feeding pieces of shrimp (long spine I think). And my first reaction was to think that the video was very cute but then I started to worry about the ethics of it. Is it ok to have a porcupine fish as a pet? It was in a fairly large but bare tank. I just want to know if it’s ethical before I spread around the video! Ty! (Sorry if this sent twice)

It’s hard to know for sure without seeing the video. I think it’s probably a bit of a contentious topic among people so I’ll give my take but feel free to check in the comments and see if anyone else has opinions and thoughts. Disclaimer: I’ve never owned a porcupine puffer. 

So, The good: Having a variety of freeze-thawed foods is good for the diet of most marine fish so the shrimp is good! A large tank is important for marine fish like puffers. I’ve seen hobbyists give minimum tank sizes anywhere from 100 - 300+ gallons for porcupine puffers so hopefully the tank is quite large. Also spreading and fostering interest in fish and ichthyology by posting cool videos of fish is rad! It helps more people know about the animal diversity on this planet and helps them learn about cool fish and I like to support that! 

The bad: I’m not a huge fan of bare tanks. (for most fish. I understand some species benefit from having a bare tank) Partially for aesthetic reasons, but also because I feel like many fish benefit from having some enrichment in their environment in the form of rocks, sand, etc. Puffers are very smart and personable fish so they would probably really benefit from having things to play around/with. But again, the bare tank might have been just a feeding tank which was left bare for better cleaning. It’s hard to know for sure from just one video or description of a video so I try not to make assumptions. 

Finally, the last point I’ll make here is that, to my knowledge, porcupine puffers are not bred in captivity. So all of them are wild caught. Some people are against this on principle which is fine!  Diodon holocanthus is listed as Least Concern on Wikipedia so it doesn’t appear that the pet trade is significantly harming the wild population. Personally I’ve shifted my own fishkeeping toward species that are captive bred in the past year or so just for my own personal reasons but I don’t have anything against people who buy wild-caught fish as long as the pet trade isn’t harming the natural populations. 

Anyway. It’s a bit of a debated issue so I think different people draw different conclusions. It’s kinda hard to draw my own without seeing the video but this is just me trying to kinda talk about the good and the bad parts. Again if anyone has any thoughts feel free to leave them in the comments!

I just got my first bunny (not for meat but as a pet) and shes so cute but I'm still going to eat rabbit because they're delicious

i recommend pasta or gumbo, maybe not always quick but very easy and gumbo makes a ton of leftovers :q

If you want to talk “tone-deafness”, that’s way more tone-deaf than a mentally ill person using fiction to connect to a real-world issue. Don’t use mental illness to justify racism, no, but don’t use social justice as an excuse to hurt people, either. Social justice is not a zero-sum game.

Whether this is a physical thing because of the magic and potions they’re exposed to (like the Waif with her poisons), or whether it’s psychological, part of their being “no one” oath or whatever, we’ll just have to see, I guess. Between Arya in Braavos and Pate-formerly-known-as-Jaqen in Oldtown, we should get some kind of useful information eventually…

Oh also idk where you are located but have you ever had problems with RHDV2?

i am in washington state.  we were one of the first places to have an rhdv2 outbreak, but it was pretty successfully sequestered to the islands and there hasn’t been an incident since 2017 or 2018 as far as i know.  it’s pretty much only a problem in the south currently.
