In the small Devon village of "Beer" (yes it's called Beer, but no it doesn't produce any of its own. I personally feel this is a missed opportunity), a few mad locals have been organizing an annual "bake off" on the day after Boxing day. This year, my friend decided that we should enter. Tom has varied cooking skills to say the least. He’s also the kind of idiot who has grand, elaborate ideas, but fails to plan how to effectively carry them out. So, when I turned up on the morning for the 27th (he insisted that we need not make it the day before), he had 2 eggs and a box of quality streets to work with. Brilliant. The theme of this cake was “Beer”, it needed two tiers and a seagull. With the two eggs and chocolate box, Tom had grand plans for a monstrous cake carved to resemble a cliff face; defined by smugglers caves and a ship wreck. Needless to say, that wasn’t going to happen. It took a few cups of coffee and some sketches on scrap paper to convince him that our best bet in the 4 hours we had, was to imitate the rock pools on Beer beach by raiding the quality streets tin. Some creative use of leftover royal icing and food colouring later, and we had a Third Place (Not too shabby!) winning sponge complete with seagull, shells, and little crabs. The moral of this story, is that men are morons and if you want a job done right you need to let the women take over.
