“This is where you draw,” they murmured, guiding his arms upward, “and here, you wait. You breathe with the trees. You don’t force the moment. It comes to you.”
Beetle tried to mimic the posture, though it looked awkward on his elongated form. “I’ve never understood this... human practice,” he muttered. “Taking something’s life. It feels...”
They didn’t respond right away. Instead, they lowered their own bow, eyes scanning the canopy above them. “It’s not about the killing,” they finally said. “It’s about understanding what it means to live.”
That silence fell again — thick, ancient, and green. A rustle to the left. Beetle tensed.

He nodded slowly. For someone who seemed stitched from myth and dream, Beetle looked oddly human in that moment — vulnerable, open. His hand brushed theirs, intentionally this time.

"The same way I always do" Beetle responded "You invited me here". "Am I... dreaming?" You asked. Beetle just stared for a moment, the small legs on the side of his mask twitching "You are" he finally confirmed, before leaning in a little "Are you... not supposed to be?". "No, I am, just- I thought I was awake" You responded "I haven't been able to sleep all night". Beetle stepped forward, sitting on the side of your bed "May I ask about that?"
You sat up more, giving him room to take his seat "Ah, I don't know. Some nights it's just really hard to turn my brain off. I don't know why, I just... wasn't feeling it". He began rubbing your scalp with his thumb, and keeping a hand on your shoulder. You sighed a bit, rolling on your back to look up at him "Is this what you do to everyone you guard, or is it just me?"
"You want to know if you are special" Beetle said bluntly. You gave a small hum, your hand reaching up to graze the touch of that deep blue mask, fingers trailing along the gold accents. "Maybe I do. Is that a bad thing?" You asked. "All humans want to be special" Beetle responded. You felt him give the tiniest movement to lean into your hand "You are no exception. You are... remarkable to me"
You smiled, an action Beetle found himself watching closely. He liked that. The gentle upturn of your lips made your eyes crinkle at the edges, which caught his attention.
