Beforus Kanaya being a gardener for Highbloods completely contradicts the established lore from when the Beforan dancestors were first introduced. It undercuts Porrim’s entire being the way she is, it just doesn’t make sense.

Either jadebloods on Beforus had the freedom to leave the caverns meaning they weren’t confined to tending the Mother Grub, which would make Porrim’s early disdain for motherhood and activism pointless and unjustified if women were always allowed manoeuvrability. Or the restrictions did exist, and Kanaya had to pull some serious strings to get a job outside the caverns, or something awful happened after Kanaya's life for the state of the caverns to be put on lock down.

Perhaps, something like a rebellion?

Bare with me, I'm cooking....

In her early adulthood and before Karkat was imprisoned he could've sought the friendship of Kanaya, who at the time, worked in the caverns as the matron. I imagine there's tunnels connecting from the mines to the caverns, and when the explosion happened, he snuck out the brooding caverns way to flee (assisted by the Matron).

After a few years on the run, he would usually come back to see Kanaya in the caverns for occasional shelter/food, but the Empress caught on he was in the area after a tip off (Potentially Equius, who tipped off Nepeta to write an article about a cavern matron being <> for an Imposter (where his title came from) ) and the Empress gave Kanaya an ultimatum:

Kanaya can hand over Karkat to live a life on the surface, but if she doesn't the cavern she's Matron of will be put under siege, cutting off the jade's food supplies until someone hands him over.

After weeks of surviving on dwindling rations, the jadebloods finally run out of food. As Matron, Kanaya is the one who has to make the call and in a grim act of duty, she hands him over to save the grubs from starvation (dichotomy of Dolorosa and Signless.)

For her “cooperation and long service to the Empire as Matron,” she’s rewarded with leniency: allowed to retire from her post and live out her later years as a gardener. It’s a hollow mercy, but one that marks her as both loyal and tainted, a symbol of obedience and her crimes are purged alongside what happened in the caverns and Karkat's imprisonment.

That event could easily become the reason jadebloods are later forbidden from leaving the caverns, or why regulations tighten so severely around the female caste and feeds into Porrim's character as a feminist. Much like Alternia’s sectarian revolt led to the banning of adults, Beforus might crack down to prevent another siege, a measure to preserve morale and control the narrative among the other castes.

The ripple effect from that act would shape Porrim’s worldview generations later, explaining her protectiveness toward Kankri, her deep distrust of authority, and perhaps even her bitterness toward her own ancestor. Maybe she resents Kanaya for aiding some random man and, in doing so, making life harsher for every jade who followed.

That connection would give their relationship real weight, grounding Beforus in political and emotional consequence instead of hehe, there's roses around Kanaya’s head! That must hint that she’s still pining for a Rose, even if this one’s only a flower.

does anyone know if it was ever mentioned in hs or an old faq/forum somewhere that max adult troll height goes up with blood caste?? or was it just max lifespan? for some reason i thought it was both...
