Erwin Lausch - Manipulation - Dangers and Benefits of Brain Research - Aidan Ellis - 1974
Whumpmas in July #5 - Who is your favourite Whumpee?
If we're talking about a favourite Whumpee from others writing (and screw you I CANNOT pick one) then mine are (and it's entirely coincidental they line up with some my all time favourite whump writers!!! 🤭🤭🤭)
-
Benjamin Adkins - from @darkthingshappen series 'Brothers Keeper'... With my whole, entire heart that none is left to protest, I adore poor Benny. Such a sweet, innocent and beautifully written character going through absolute unimaginable hell yet still retaining that beat of willpower and strength to just push through - the tiny, few and far between flickers of defiance that creep out against his tormentors every now and then that have you cheering him on from behind the screen 🤌 So resilient and strong-minded. I will never shut up about this story - you can't make me.
Jack Kenyon - from @whumpcereal series 'Behaviour Modification'. Shaking, screaming, sobbing. I cannot describe how badly I want to jump into that story's universe and pluck Jackie out and run like the wind. Life continues to deal him the shittest hand of cards and when he finally strikes luck with Joe? Ivan swoops in and tears his world apart, corrupting him to fear/think he's the property of the man he loves? 😫 Bearing in mind everything Jack's been through? And to still make it to the other side, to still function in some respect? I'd like to award him 'bravest whumpee' award.
Kane De Sang - from @whumpsday 'Kane & Jim' series: 🥺💕Kane💕🥺 The once angry, lil leech - he gets a lot of flack, I know a lot of readers would sharpen their wooden stakes on sight of him. And don't get me wrong, he was an absolute piece of shit, treated Jim horiffically. But that rescue/recovery arc - his character development - it's so wonderfully done that I can't help but fawn for the broken guy. I wanna wrap him in blankets, give him buckets of blood. He's the whumpee that made me fall head over heels for the 'whumper turned whumpee' trope, and for that? He'll always have a place in my heart-
Danny - from @t0rture-me 'Cat & Mouse' series: SWEET SWEET DANNY - the emotional turmoil that boy goes through where no matter how hard he tries, no matter how well he behaves - he still can't win, can't avoid punishment 😫 Watching him slowly retreat further and further into himself and watching his stutter worsen through the chapters pulls at my heart strings everytime. And he's so adorable with his interests and how he talks with his cat I just 🥰 yeah 🥰
And it's not out yet but I can definitely see myself becoming besotted with @leyswhumpdump new lab whumpees!!! Precious boys, oh my days - y'all are in for a treat and a half 👀👀👀
-
But also just from our own - my favourite Whumpee I've made so far is definitely Josh from my series Play Pretend - it's only just getting started but he's willing to fight and kick but also do whats necessary to survive - he'll lie, fake and comply if it gets him through it but there's times when he also won't hold back.

In the past decade, there have been several lawsuits against Teen Challenge. One mother sued for negligence, because her son was abruptly discharged from a Teen Challenge, in Jacksonville, for breaking a rule, and died of an overdose that night. This year, a student named Amaya Rasheed filed a lawsuit against Teen Challenge of Oklahoma, alleging that she was “physically restrained against her will” until she couldn’t breathe, and was denied medical care. (The director of Rasheed’s center said, “We remain confident that our actions are consistent with our First Amendment rights to honor our Lord and our legal obligations under Oklahoma and Federal law.”) Former employees have sued, too: a staff member in Georgia alleged that he was fired after he revealed that he had been hospitalized for depression; an employee in Oregon sued because she was terminated, on the ground of “moral failure,” for getting pregnant out of wedlock.
But these lawsuits almost never go to trial, because staff and residents (or their parents) sign a contract waiving the “right to file a lawsuit in any civil court.” Instead, the contract says that their “sole remedy” for any dispute will be “Biblically based mediation” or Christian conciliation, a type of legal arbitration. A Times investigation in 2015 found that religious-arbitration clauses, like the one used at Teen Challenge, have created “an alternate system of justice” that is often “impervious to legal challenges” and obstructs families not only from suing but from gathering facts.
Teen Challenge has been in operation for more than sixty years, but there is little public record of what occurs in its facilities. A kind of collective amnesia is fostered not only by the contract but by the culture. Once students leave some programs, their friends are not allowed to refer to them by name. Jasmine Smith, who worked at the Lakeland Teen Challenge until last winter, told me, “We had to refer to people who left the program as ‘a past student’ or ‘a past staff.’ ” Fitzpatrick, the former staff member, said that she was forbidden to communicate with employees who had resigned or been fired. She had to unfriend them on Facebook. Fitzpatrick worries that Teen Challenge will prevent her from getting new jobs, and she told me, “Even doing this interview, I’m shaking—I didn’t realize the fear.”

"my dog won't eat kibble"
Okay. So teach them to value kibble. This is dog training it's about modifying behaviour. Modify the behaviour.
When you are working through reactivity, progress can seem painfully slow. Add to this the fact that having a reactive dog is embarrassing, isolating and emotional, and the whole ordeal becomes exhausting and a major source of stress.
But with hard work, patience and reward-based training, things can and will improve. Then one day, you will look at your dog and notice just how far they have come, and it is the most rewarding feeling.
Here is a photo of Logan from yesterday's walk. He saw an excess of several dozen dogs of various sizes and breeds, at different distances, some of them chasing balls or running around off-lead (movement is a big trigger for him), but he didn't react to any of them. He made excellent unprompted choices and was much more interested in engaging with me.
I wanted to share this in the hopes that anyone going through similar struggles with their dogs will feel less alone.
Take note of your successes. Learn from mistakes and setbacks, but move on from them. Be kind to yourself and to your dog, remember that they aren't trying to give you a hard time - they are having a hard time!
It doesn't happen overnight. If you are struggling with a reactive/aggressive dog, enlisting the help of a qualified professional is very important. (The Academy for Dog Trainers has a directory of certified trainers which is the best place to start).
"Don't give up on the hard dogs, they will give you something you never knew you needed." - Kris Cretejo
“The GoodGirl training collar is an efficient behavior modification tool that will help you train your pet. Using a progressive correction stimulus, the device creates an association your pet will understand to improve disobedient behavior. With 100 levels of vibration and static shock you will be able to find the right correction for your pet's personality and size.
Using the Remote Trainer consistently and correctly, many misbehaviors that your pet exhibits can be corrected or any basic obedience commands can be taught. “
There are two take-home points for behaviorists and trainers. First, owners should be made aware that the treatment for fear and anxiety will generally take longer and may be vulnerable to relapse in animals with a neurotic/introverted temperament or a history of trauma. Second, behavior modification recommendations should emphasize long exposures to weak triggers. In my experience many failed desensitization efforts are a direct result of violation of these two conditions. For example, letting another dog approach and greet a fearful dog is too intense! Quick retreats at the first sight of an approaching dog is too brief! Letting your dog watch another dog from a distance and for a long time (until he loses interest is best) will produce the most effective results in most cases. I have used the example of dog-dog reactivity, but the same principles apply to any fear-based behavior issue.
