- Behind and Beyond – Part 4

We sat by the dining table, eating dinner, quietly. Silently I enjoyed the meal Lau had prepared for us, but the company on the other hand could’ve been different. Without looking, I swore I could feel Xiao’s gaze on me from time to time. The thought about him looking at me made me almost lose my appetite.

I ignored the feeling as I took the plates to the sink to clean once we finished our meal. I could hear the boys vaguely talk about something in the background. I tried not to focus on it too much, however, there was something in Lau’s voice that made me wonder what it could be. Their low muttering didn’t make sense in my ears although I tried to pay attention to it.

Seeing it was pretty much useless, I silently moved towards the front door.

“Yu.” I froze on the spot upon hearing Xiao’s voice call my name. I swallowed a lump down my throat as I tried not to pay attention to the spinning feeling in my stomach. “Where are you going?” he continued to ask.

“Out,” I replied simply. I’m going for a walk. A very, very long one.

“Sorry to break the mood Yu, but ehh, can’t really let you go.” My hands clenched into fists. “It’d be troublesome if you decided to turn this walk… into a permanent long one. Got any idea how difficult you were to get in contact with?” Xiao kept pushing. I cursed under my breath.

I felt lost in the moment and didn’t realise I was yanked away from the door.

“Get your filthy hands off me!” I snarled as I fought to get out of his grip.

“You’re staying right here!”

“Fuck you! You have no right to tell me what to do!” I spat. The whole situation heated up and to be honest, I thought he might just have hit me if he got the chance.

“Xiao that’s enough!” Lau’s voice boomed over our shouting, and made us stop almost instantly. I never heard him like that and to be quite frank it scared me a little. Wriggling my arm free from Xiao’s hold I dashed past the two of them. I wanted to scream in their faces and disappear out of the door that lead to the streets, but some part of me didn’t dare to move in that direction.

The angry tears had stopped long time ago. I had no idea how long time I had been sitting in the same position. At some point I wondered if I had managed to fall asleep, because when the bed suddenly shifted next to me I got startled.

“He didn’t mean it so bad.” I didn’t answer. I had nothing to say to him right now. “I know things are difficult for you right now, but please Yin, open up for me. I know I hurt you, but you can’t stay mad at me forever.” Lau spoke in a calm manner. I can!

There was some silence and I heard him sigh. Could I just turn to him and hug him and tell him I was sorry about the whole thing? The little girl inside me wanted to, but I wasn’t a little girl any more, I wasn’t going to live on the hope that something as simple as that was going to fix anything.

“I hate him,” as soon as I said those words, Lau forced back a groan which he didn’t succeed in.

“You know… you shouldn’t judge people just like that. There are good things about Xiao – although they might be difficult to find, especially for you. He doesn’t mean things as hard as he says them. Just like you.” I frowned with his words. Yea right.

Then there was a silence once more. Something about having him this close after so long felt weird. Scooting close to him I leaned against his back, resting my head on his shoulder. He felt so calm, and smelt so good I felt my body relax.

“Lau…”

“Hm?” there was some lightness in his voice.

“Thank you for coming back”
