🎸 Behr Paint vs. The Rolling Stones: A Copyright Clash

Things just got louder in the world of IP law.

Record label ABKCO Music has sued Behr Paint for using the Rolling Stones classic “Paint It, Black” in an Instagram ad without permission. The ad showcased a cozy DIY coffee-and-wine bar makeover using Behr paints — but the soundtrack choice came with serious legal consequences.

According to ABKCO, Behr’s use of the song created an unwanted brand association and offered zero compensation to the rights holders. The label says it discovered the infringement in June 2025, notified Behr in August, and then… silence. No response. No license. No settlement.

What makes it more striking? Behr is a multi-billion-dollar company that regularly licenses music for ads — just not this time. Now ABKCO is seeking monetary damages for the unauthorized use.

🎵 “Paint It, Black” isn’t just any track — it hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1966 and is part of ABKCO’s catalog from the Stones’ early era.
