also. to clarify. this is not a blorbos post! this is not asking what your all time favorite shows are and why etc. lol if we're moots already i probs have some idea. this post is specifically asking: which shows do you watch in secret, or with trusted besties only, bc you love them but you think people would roast you for admitting to actually enjoying omg really ?
i think i will tag ten ppl. no pressure tags! and anyone interested is invited to reblog and answer the question. or start a fresh post as you prefer!

honestly, I won't deny it, the drama is a classic and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. bei weiwei and xiao nai were literally written to be the ideal couple- they have it all, they're smart, beautiful and sensible which I guess is such a breath of fresh air from all those dramas where the lead couple have you pulling your hair out in frustration due to the ridiculous misunderstandings that occur between them.
however, it definitely still has its merits and its flaws, but I don't hate it as much as I did when I watched it for the second time back when I was 15. seeing it for the third time I can definitely see why it's considered a classic- so. lets get into it!

[ even though in my mind it is a classic, I think the only really unique thing about it is how mature (lmao) the main characters are. the tropes and the arguments it presents are pretty standard. I'm also not the biggest fan of the drama's messages ]

the characters in this drama were all pretty good. I liked them all quite a bit. rewatching the drama for the third time, and with a much better understanding of mandarin in comparison to when I was 12 and 15 really made me appreciate how witty the writing was for some of these characters? I really liked the humour they had, even though sometimes it was a little stylised in true cdrama style. I loved the banter between bei weiwei and xiao nai and also the dynamics of their respective friend groups- I actually found myself laughing along.
however, the drama definitely careened a little bit too much into wish fulfilment which limited how well written their characters could be. most of the characters were pretty one-note, ESPECIALLY the two main leads. neither bei weiwei or xiao nai change much over the course of the drama and neither undergo any character development to speak of. it was also rather unrealistic and hard to believe how much the drama seemed to orbit around the two main leads unconditionally, in particular xiao nai. despite the female lead being presented as similarly intelligent and capable, her skills and abilities were kind of thrown aside to favour xiao nai's story. although it wasn't badly written and it did make sense for the direction the narrative was moving, it still kind of sucks and does feel pretty gendered in my opinion.
𝖕𝖑𝖔𝖙 - 6/10
moving on to plot, I feel like this situation is rather recurrent in the drama- this situation where things work out almost too ideally for the main characters that it feels almost unrealistic, but within the set up of the drama it makes sense. which makes it a fairly well written wish fulfilment kind of drama- and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it, because I did T-T. but the plot was pretty solid.
however, the drama's narrative never really sat well with me even as a 15 year old, mainly because how traditionalist it was. sure, the plot did shed light on the treatment of women in corporate culture, women in gaming and in stem, as well as the struggles of being a conventionally attractive woman and also homosexuality; it doesn't really challenge the traditionalist mindset that produced this problems in the first place- even encouraging them. like when bei weiwei is consistently slandered throughout the drama for being sexually promiscuous, the drama resolves this with her beating these allegations by proving her sexual purity and demonising the sexually promiscuous xiao yu qingqing. I also really despised the lack of voice weiwei had during her more intimate moments with xiao nai. every kiss throughout the drama and every move towards something more was always initiated by xiao nai, with weiwei being the passive, slightly wary yet pleased receiver.
nevertheless tho, it's not a bad drama. it makes sense, it's just some things it- sigh. lets leave it here. if I open up the homophobia box as well I will never stop. Love O2O and I... it's a love-hate relationship y'all.

overall, the acting was pretty decent and believable. I really liked the chemistry between the friend groups in the drama in particular, it all felt rather natural and easy. however some scenes were pretty stylised and over the top, in true romance-idol-cdrama style, which I can watch, just not the biggest fan of. in terms the the lead couples, yang yang and zheng shuang are literally the prettiest two people you can put on screen together- I'll give them that lol- though I kind of got this feeling that both of them were very very very aware of the camera that was watching them. their expressions and actions often didn't really feel like real people but felt very calculated to look good on camera. yang yang also wasn't the most expressive, though I suppose that might of just been xiao nai's character.
𝖕𝖗𝖔𝖉𝖚𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓 - 7/10
the production on the whole was fairly decent, and I appreciate the work done used to create the gamescape. for an idol drama the sets were fairly okay, and just about believable though it definitely doesn't have a lived-in feel in comparison to some better quality productions and sometimes the luxuriousness of the places like xiao nai's office and bei weiwei's university dormitory felt slightly ridiculous. the ost on the other hand tho, slaps.

"I'm in love with Xiao Nai."
Bei WeiWei's words kept repeating in your head, growing louder and louder by the minute.
How could you not feel bad to both her and yourself. Her, because you were dating him, and yourself because she was so much better than you.
She was one of the number one pretty girls in your school in both looks and personality, she was skinny and cute. She had good grades and most importantly, she fitted with Xiao Nia unlike you. They both played games, being married in their main game, and playing it almost every day for hours. You knew that they played that much, because you were with Xiao Nia most of the time as he played.
But you also knew that everyone else thought that they were a perfect fit for each other, hearing the whispers of them while you walked on the campus. You always walked next to them, but they are usually to immersed into their game strategies to even notice that you were lagging behind or to hear the whispers from the students. Even when they were playing, Xiao Nia's teammates were always joking about their relationship. Even when you knew they were joking, you couldn't help but pay attention to the words.
3 days later, you still hadn't figured out whether you should tell WeiWei about your relationship with Xian Nia or if you should just give up and wallow in self pity. Your mind decided on the latter and soon enough, you were losing all control of yourself.
Hours of not eating as you cried soon turned into starving yourself, only eating once in a few days to stay alive. Your emotions started to fade in public, but once home every emotions crashed into you at once. And finally, you started to shut out everyone that tried to talk to you or show any concern. Including your boyfriend.
He had already noticed everything, noticing how thin you had grown or how quiet you had become or the fact that you avoided being near him. He was worried, trying to get you to talk to him. Then he gave up in being nice.
"(Y/n)!" Xiao Nia yelled, running after you before softly grabbing your arm to turn you around to face him. You flinched, not having heard him before tensing up when you noticed his gaze. It was full of worry, but your mind translated it to pity and you didn't want that. So you removed his hand from your arm before awkwardly putting your hands in your pockets.
"What?" Your voice was hoarse, you had cried all night after all, and he sighed softly before leading you to an empty class room. Once the door closed, he held your hands softly,
"What's wrong?" He asked, leaning forward so his face was in front of yours while placing his hands on your shoulders softly. You looked down, not wanting to look him in the eye.
"Nothing..." "Don't lie, please." His voice cracked slightly, but you didn't look up as tears started welling up in your eyes.
"Please tell me what's wrong." He asked and you broke down, pushing him off before screaming out.
"Everything is! WeiWei is in love with you and I can never compare to her! She's perfect in every way and I'm not even a quarter worth of her!" You screamed loudly before crashing to the ground when your knees gave out. Xiao Nia looked at you in shock before kneeling in front of you and holding your face in his hands, softly wiping away the tears that were cascading down your face.
"She isn't in love with me. She mistook our friendship as love."
-Flashback-
WeiWei smiled at Xiao Nia as she sipped her drink, waiting for him to join her at the table. When he did, she just smiled brighter and put her drink down.
"Why did you want to see me?" Xiao Nia asked as he drank from his own drink before crossing his legs. WeiWei sighed, putting her drink down before speaking up.
"I'm in love with you." She said confidently, but Xiao Nia didn't show much of a reaction.
"I think you're mistaken..." He finally answered and WeiWei frowned, a bit annoyed.
"I know my own feelings." "Do you really love me though? Or do you just think of me as a really good friend?" He asked and she sighed, leaning back in her chair.
"Then what do I feel for you?" "Maybe you just feel a good friendship with me?" Xiao Nia questioned, shrugging his shoulders as WeiWei leaned back to think.
"Think of it this way. Do you want to kiss me or anything in that range?" He asked and WeiWei shook her head quickly before seemingly realizing.
"I think you're right." She then said, chuckling slightly in awkwardness.
"Good, because I also have a girlfriend." He continued and WeiWei looked up in shock.
"You do? Who?" "(Y/n)." He answered nonchalantly and WeiWei almost spit out her drink.
"What?! But she didn't say anything when I told her." WeiWei said, but Xiao Nia didn't answer once again and only hummed again. He didn't know how to respond to the new information.
-End Flashback-
"But-" "Don't. You are perfect, you don't need to change yourself to fit someone else's standards. I fell in love with you because you're you. You have flaws, but I love you despite those and you don't need to change anything." He spoke and you hiccupped softly as he wiped away your tears before kissing your forehead sweetly. He then pulled away from you and looked you up and down.
"You've lost too much weight..." He stated as his hands fell to your hips, eyes slightly widening as he felt how skinny you really were underneath your sweater.
"Did you have lunch?" He asked and you looked at him before shaking your head, which then triggered a loud rumbling from your stomach.
"Let's get you some food then." He said before helping you up, his hand settling on the small of your back to guide you. He guided you to the cafeteria, grabbing some food and paying before pulling you out again and to the empty classroom again.
"Let's eat here." He said as he sat down, pulling you to sit in between his legs before opening the food containers and eating from it. He fed you ever so often, taking it slow so that you didn't get nauseous from eating too much. After a few bites, you shook your head as you curled into him. He just kissed your forehead softly before closing the containers and putting them back in the bag before wrapping his arms around you.
"I love you." He said, kissing your forehead again before leaning his head on yours. You hugged him before looking up.
"I love you too." You replied softly before burying your face in his chest, just mumbling the words 'I love you' a few more times as he rubbed circles on your back.
"We should go to class..." You mumbled, Xiao Nia nodded softly as he helped you up before following you to your shared class. You entered the class, which was still empty except for the teacher at the front and maybe 2 or 3 students. You sat in your usual spot on the 5th row, Xiao Nia sitting next to you for once. He usually sat at the complete front and by the time you got to the class, the seats around him were usually occupied. That, and you wouldn't really want to sit near a group a fangirls.
Xiao Nia took your hand in his, giving you a small smile. You gave a small smile back, feeling a lot better as the voice in the back of your head had stopped nagging at you.
"You guys are adorable." WeiWei entered, sitting the seat in front of you before turning around to face you.
"Next time just tell me, we're friends. You can trust me." She said with a bright smile and you nodded, your face slightly heating up when you felt an arm wrap around your shoulders. The class started to fill with students, not so much as usual. Then you heard phones beeping and soon the class was suddenly completely full, some students even sitting on the stairs.
You were a bit annoyed as you heard whispers behind you and clicks of the phone camera's, but you decided to just ignore it. Maybe it was because of Xiao Nia's hand in yours, but you felt fine with the eyes that were glaring at you from behind.
The lesson ended as soon as it started and you grabbed your stuff quickly, hand letting go off Xiao Nia's for a second. Once you were finished with packing, Xiao Nia grabbed your hand again. He pulled you up, starting the whispers up again. Your face heated up again as you followed him, your gaze on the ground as the whispers got louder before everything went quiet.
"(y/n)?" Xiao Nia stopped outside of the classroom, looking at you. You looked up before giving him a smile.
"I'm okay... Just a bit..." You paused and he gave a small smile back before hugging you and kissing your forehead.
"Just ignore them. They can think what they want, but I'm with you at the end of the day." He said and you looked at him before kissing him on the lips quickly.
