Liu Xiaodong (Chinese, 1963) - Out of Beichuan (2010)
🙆♂️
Liu Xiao Dong, Out of Beichuan, 2010, oil on canvas.
The changing Chinese landscape is a growing theme among Chinese contemporary artists.
Artist Liu Xiao Dong depicts the scene after a seismic earthquake in 2008 in Beichuan, central China, in which hundreds of thousands lost their lives, and where a smaller quake occurred again in 2013. The scene shows Chinese youth in the foreground of a desolated city.
Artist Xu Ze also comments on the destruction of the Chinese landscape, specifically via earthquakes and rapid urbanization. He Ming Ke focuses on the strength of Chinese culture to withstand these changes.

Sichuan Earthquake, 5 Years Later
In 2008, the town of Beichuan was hardest hit by the Sichuan earthquake: "Chinese authorities decided to stabilize the remaining buildings after the earthquake, preserving the entire town as a memorial to the tremendous loss."
Fallen City (Qi, 2013)
When an earthquake struck the Chinese mountain city of Beichuan in 2008, it was completely destroyed. Twenty thousand people died. Fallen City zooms in on the lives of three survivors, who are marked by painful memories and deep sadness.
Directed and produced by two of the men responsible for "Last Train Home", a seriously good doc about the annual migration in China that occurs every Chinese New Year, I have high hopes for this.
