DRAGON'S DOGMA: DARK ARISEN (∞)
Absolutely tore through Adrienne Young’s Fallen City. Talk about a book that hooked me almost instantly- I absolutely love fantasy politics so when I opened this up to heavy political intrigue AND star crossed lovers I knew I was done for. I’m aware of Young’s other books but this was my first by her and it’s making me consider picking up her backlog. The writing was delicious and I love a book that feeds you the background as to why things are happening slowly- you can put me in medias res but your flashbacks better be great and they were with this one!
I enjoyed the characters a lot but would’ve loved more fleshing out. Maris and Luca were great characters but I would’ve liked to see more of their relationship playing out. This book left little room for fluff and I would say mentally read like a movie- that’s not a bad thing! With a familiar, Greco-Roman inspired setting it was a very immersive read which balanced well with the political aspect. I, personally, would’ve liked more fat but I am also one to commit to a story being drawn out in a way most people do not like. I’ll say the same thing about the lore- it was SO juicy and interesting but I’m also one to die for an encyclopedia about literally any lore.
I’ll always be a sucker for young people who want to change the world learning that, while they absolutely can, it’s not something that can come without significant sacrifice. Unfortunately, we call that realism.
I’m super excited for the second book! I had no idea going in if it was a standalone (it’s not) and refused to look it up so I was incredibly stressed (love that for me, when books stress me out) when I had ten pages left and still was NOT sure what note this was going to end on. Highly recommend if you love fantasy politics, star crossed lovers, and Greco-Roman inspired settings.

Absolutely screaming once I realized who Ally was (at least 3 seconds before the reveal) when my thought from the first love interest between Bruce and Ally made me so suspicious. Bruce's love interests seem to backfire
Still screaming though!
AS-FallenCity is a very chilly post apocalyptic map, which I love the atmosphere of. Huge imposing buildings and cool industrial interiors.
I enjoy these junky old vehicle models!
If you clip out of bounds you can find some neat liminal spaces too.
