Back to my Hanfu posts now that my allergy has mostly cleared :D
The shan/ao style really creates a very slim, simple silhouette which was popular during the Song Dynasty. If you prefer more simplistic and soft styles, with lots of flowers, then take a look at the Song Dynasty's fashion.

What's the difference between shan and beizi?
The definition of shan and beizi changed overtimes. Short answer: shan is an unlined inner-wear (can be worn on its own) while beizi is an outer wear (must be worn outside of something). Beizi in many situations refers to a formal jacket, especially when discussing about Song dynasty clothing. In those cases they are generally highly decorative (mostly the collar) and reaching at least the calf. Nowadays some people might wear beizi on its own without a shan, like wearing a blazer without a shirt, so confusion might arise. It is generally fine.
I have an old posts from 2021 with pictures; they are not the most up-to-date (the terminology for the short-sleeves from Song dynasty might have changed to beixin. I don't have my books with me so I can't check) but the general idea is there.
