I fucking love Mulan-type stories does anyone have any recommendations?
Mulan-type stories, you say?
As a matter of fact, I know of a very fun one from the Nart Sagas of the Caucasus region â the tale of Alimbegâs Daughter, which I adapted into a comic a few years ago.
You can read this and other Nart Saga adaptations on my site (adults only, please!):
"A Modern Venus, or a Lady of the PRESENT Fashion in the state of Nature, 1786. This is the Form, if we believe the Fair, Of which our Ladies are, or wish they were."
ive watched this like 20 times and it just gets funnier
My fan art of this kooky outfit worn by Dorothy in the original 1903 Wizard of Oz Broadway musical, based on the wonderful costume designs of Caroline Siedle!
By the way, yâall should watch this amazing fanwork I found while researching this drawing â an adaptation of the musical in stop-motion form, complete with faithfully recreated costumes and elaborate sets:

Guys if you want queer shit written by queers on our own terms you're going to have to start seeking out weird independent media. I'm sorry that's the only place you can regularly find it idk what to tell you, we can't keep acting like there's nothing if we're not getting blockbusters and triple A titles or whatever it is we're waiting around for. The thing you keep saying you want is already being offered for free by one person making a passion project on the internet and you would both benefit enormously if you interacted with it instead of lamenting that the only options we have for representation are pandering afterthoughts from corporate shit
Can we also read the graphic novel SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES by Anais Flogny that I edited the English language edition of which is compellingly told queer romance for adults that we can only publish more of if more queer people find it, read it, and love it: https://www.abramsbooks.com/product/smoke-gets-in-your-eyes_9781419785696/
A gripping and lushly illustrated tale of love and lies set between 1930s Chicago and New York's criminal underworld, perfect for fans of ma
It's always fun when you see smoochy fanart of two characters you don't recognize, and it's just tagged something like #glorpaflomp and you're like, well, I'll never know what that was but I'm glad people are having a good time.

Tolkien wasn't super clear about this and what hints he did put in, the movies left out, but the answer is: The Ring controls people.
In the book, Frodo does this to Gollum on the slopes of Mount Doom, and curses him to "yourself be thrown into the Fire" if he ever touches him again.
I feel Peter Jackson didn't understand that -- as he also didn't understand why Gollum, having sworn on the Ring not to harm Frodo, couldn't (personally) harm Frodo (and therefore had to lead him into Cirith Ungol for Shelob to kill him instead).
"Smeagol promised!" "Smeagol lied" was never how it worked.
Which is why Jackson had Frodo still apparently be drawn to the Ring after it was bitten off him and attack Gollum and push him over, because he thought Gollum just "randomly fell off the edge" in the book. It wasn't random, it was the effect of Frodo's curse using the Ring's power.
At all levels the Ring's power is to give its bearer power. For small mortal folks like Hobbits that means the gift of invisibility, which, like the Ring of Gyges in Plato's Republic, removes social consequences for one's actions. For people like Denethor or Aragorn it would have meant the power to command armies, which is what Sauron thought was happening when Aragorn marched on the Black Gate and why he sent every soldier he'd got to take it back. For Gandalf ("through me the Ring would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine") or Galadriel ("all shall love me and despair") it would have meant phenomenal power over nature.
I agree with all of this, but I want to add that it would be incomplete to say Gollum fell into the cracks of doom just because of the power of Frodoâs curse.
In Tolkien, words of magic have power because they reflect an underlying truth of the world. Gandalf says to the Balrog, âYou cannot pass!â and indeed, the Balrog cannot pass; when it tries, the fragile bridge gives out under its feet and it falls.
Similarly, when Frodo curses Gollum, there is already an underlying truth of the world that explains why Gollum will be cast into the fire.
The one ring has consumed Gollum for so long that he no longer has any desire but to hold it again. And when at last he achieves his dream, Gollum is utterly fulfilled, no thoughts head empty, just vibing. This is a terminally dangerous state of mind when youâre standing atop a cliff overlooking a pool of magma.
If any other being in Middle-earth had seized the ring at that moment, in its place of power, they would have had something they wanted to use it for, and it would have been able to use them.
Only Gollum could have destroyed the one ring, because only Gollum was so wretched, so emptied out that he truly wanted nothing more than to simply have the precious. And so he didnât watch where he was going, and he fell.
Frodo cursed Gollum, but, equally, the ring cursed itself. By robbing Gollum of everything that he was, it made its own destruction possible. In the biz, we call this a BIG OLâ WHOOPSIEDOODLE.
By the way: having Gollum, and by extension Sauron, basically slip on a banana peel and die is a genuinely hilarious punchline to 1,000 pages of angst. Iâll always be sad that Peter Jackson deleted one of literatureâs sublime moments of comedy.

Did you know that JRR Tolkien wrote an unpublished epilogue to Lord of the Rings? It's achingly, beautifully wistful in the way that only Lord of the Rings is. I revisited it recently because I'm guesting on my friends' LOTR podcast, and THAT reminded me that I drew a comic of the epilogue back in 2021 (all text is entirely canon). Anyway I thought folks on this website might enjoy it!
