So after days of pleading with other countries to spred awareness about the current situation in Serbia, a tweet with a video showing police brutality got spread:

Apparently only problems worth talking about are those of first-world countries. And it seems that to a lot of people Europe will always remain just England, France, Germany and Italy. And let all of us living in small countries oppresed by totalitarian regimes rot ig.

I haven't seen this on my dash at all, and the only post I found talking about it was made by a TERF, so here I am.
Rio Tinto is planning to mine lithium in western Serbia (Jadar Valley), and the Serbian government recently almost unanimously agreed to basically let them do whatever they want, regardless of the protests that happenened in July and the protests that happened more recently in November.
The president Aleksandar Vučić and the government have ignored the wishes and cries of their citizens to take care of us and the land first, and plan to allow Rio Tinto (which has been involved in several scandals regarding human rights violations, destruction of indigenous land, etc) to destroy it, poison our land and water and air. They'll destroy our country and lives for profit- unofficially, though probably, they're all being being paid off by Rio Tinto. One of, if not the, biggest news broadcasters (RTS), are on the president's side and refuse to help spread word of the destruction Rio Tinto will bring.
Today (27th of November), citizens protested by blocking traffic and roads. There are plans to continue protesting until the president and the government are forced to stop Rio Tinto from destroying our land.
I can't even put into words how damaging this will be, not only because of what Rio Tinto will do, but because allowing our greedy government to do what they like will open the doors to them doing horrid things in the future too.
There's a petition you can sign, but even more important that that is spreading the word, and I thank you in advance if you can do that.

"Violent, fascist, hooligans who believe the world is flat and only want to violently overthrow the current government." That's how our president described the protestors. This happened at the end, after all the tear gas and after the police managed to seperate and disperse most of the crowd.
Stay informed, open your eyes. Watch every video, read every account. But don't get desensitized to it. This violence is not normal. Don't get accustomed to it. Watch it all if you can. Remember it. Police are not your friend but do not let it become the norm and don't ignore it.
Oftentimes we tend to not notice the absurdity of things that we repeatedly see. It becomes the norm because we see it so much. Don't let this be the norm. Don't let it not affect you. Don't let it make you apathetic.
It can be triggering to a lot of people, so don't feel bad that you can't watch it or that it makes you physically or mentally sick. That's the normal reaction.

In Niš people trew eggs and trash at a billboard, and after that cleaned up the trash.
In Novi Sad people were running from tear gas and stopped at the red light to not inconvenience the drivers.
In Belgrade while running from antiriot police into a park people yelled "Look out for the flowers"
Those are the people of this country, that is the chance for change that is the picture world should see. Not the paid instigators and fascists that are there to kill the will of people to stand for their rights.
Kids in the streets are not violent they don't want to destroy their cities!

Nope :/ They stopped a while ago, and nothing has changed, or perhaps it's changed for the worse (as it somehow always does in this country lmao). These days the government fakes c*vid related statistics and blames the rise in the numbers of infected on the protests.
Also around 2000-3000 medical professionals signed a petition to change the crisis hub (krizni štab??) because they're disrespectful government biased assholes, and a lot of doctors who signed the petition started getting pressure from their workplace, one woman in particular quit her job.
Lastly the department that's supposed to prevent money laundering published a list of a bunch of non government organisations and people who criticize the government, and ordered the banks to deliver all the details of their transactions to investigate... money laundering?? It's honestly tragicomic because it's so widely known that the government is *allegedly*involved in money laundering but everything is upside down in this country
