Big fan of Ladybird and her whole vibe, if you’re up to talk about it, how did you end up first getting the idea for her and what was the process like? I think the inspirations you have behind her are super neat and I just generally love her design and story (I grew up really obsessed with a book of old 70s movie posters on the family book shelf and her design reminds me so much of some of the classics I remember seeing in there!)
hi!! i got the idea for ladybird after watching black westerns from the 30s and blaxploitation movies from the 70s! notably: the bronze buckaroo (1939) harlem rides the range (1939) sheba, baby (1975) and five on the black hand side (1975) i actually finished her reference while watching the last movie hehe
while fallout is already anachronistic... i didn't really see people making characters that reference the 70s as much, which makes sense because the majority of the series leans heavy into the 50s-60s.
i wasn't sure if it was something that would even work, but i think it did and i like that it sets ladybird apart :) considering my other courier, georgia, is a much more straight forward cowboy archetype, i wanted to play with a character that was a showgirl and LOVED vegas since most of the characters i ever made for that game did not care for the glitz and glam of the strip.
the really fun thing about ladybird that i've never spoken about is actually the way she speaks! while aave has been co-opted so quickly in the past two decades that terminology we use quickly fall out of fashion, watching these films from the 30s and the 70s made me realize how much that syntax wasn't that much different, even across multiple decades.
i don't post my writings of ladybird much, but what could be considered "jive talking" that we associate with the 70s (which IS her time period inspiration regardless) was actually used for decades prior. idk a small thing that means so much to me when it comes to her characterization, more than anything even remotely physical tbh!
