he knew the answer he should give, should have been 'yes, i was going to tell you', but he wasn't sure he could give that answer in all honesty. "i don't know." it wasn't the most helpful answer, nor was it going to help her make sense of the situation, but it was all that he had. "you... you wanted them to be from someone else. and when i started leaving the notes, i... well i honestly didn't plan anything long term. i wanted to try and cheer you up somehow, but we weren't exactly too friendly with each other. when you had somebody else in mind, i didn't want to burst that bubble for you."

"i know, there's literally nothing more rebellious than this. don't know how i'll top it." glancing over at her, as she sat down beside him, he nodded slowly at her words, looking back up at the sky. "kinda makes all your problem seem small, you know? you're just one tiny person in all of that." gesturing up to the stars above them. "a very strange reminder that your problems aren't the end of the world."

"i think you should meet a new kind of person." someone who'd actually care about her, because from everything he'd seen, none of her current 'friends' seemed to truly care about her. "well... guess i didn't." the words almost hesitant, since no, he didn't have to kiss her. he hadn't truly thought it through, he'd heard her friends speaking ill of her, and he'd acted before his brain caught up with him. "i didn't... i heard... i'm sorry."

it was some stupid throwaway comments. people in one of his classes talking about their favourite football players of old time - a perfectly innocent conversation. and it was a perfectly innocent older student who’d said ben’s father happened to be his favourite ‘until the unfortunate incident’. nobody on his course knew who his father was, which meant the comment was said with no malice, which somehow made it worse in ben’s mind. he had no memory of his father - yet someone who could remember him, was more upset about losing a good player than the fact somebody had lost their life. unable to sleep thanks to endless thoughts running around in his mind, he’d headed out to look at the stars - something that had always calmed him.

pushing himself up on his elbows when he heard a voice - a voice he could place easily, he shrugged before settling back down on the ground. “what can i say? i’m a rebel without a cause remember? never follow the rules.”
