The Mosaic Fellowship
About a year ago I found out that I was accepted into the Tennessee Educational Equity Coalition’s Mosaic Fellowship. It’s a statewide leadership program specifically for people of color working in education. At the time I applied, I don’t think I fully understood what that even meant. It was just something I knew that it was a relatively unique professional development opportunity that applied to my work. To be completely honest, it was also something I knew that would look great on my resume. Now having just gotten back from our last retreat, I know that I’ve been changed by the experience, but the scope and depth of that change, I’m not sure I’ll ever fully understand.
There’s a few things I did learn though, but before that, I wanted to share this really dope art made by Prado Studio for the Mosaic fellows. Each piece represents one of the fellows, which I think does a good job of symbolizing the power of individuals in collectivity. Anyway, on to some things I know now:
My racial justice work in Nashville needs to be centered on Asian people. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but the fellowship provided a lot of the impetus for getting the work started. There’s a need for it to be done and I’m in a position where I can do this some of this work right now.
I’ve been approaching text wrong. It’s kind of weird to say, but I feel like I’m a better reader now. It’s not about the skill itself -- I do way more reading for school. I’ve come to look at text differently. Before the fellowship, I viewed text as something entirely separate from myself and in some ways holy. I even refused to write in or highlight books/articles. Now I think about how I dialogue with text (both ideologically and with ink) and think about it in the context of my own perspective.
I need to be more conscientious of space and place. Place is something I’ve thought a lot about, but I still need to take time to intentionally connect to it. In particular, I know I need to just be in nature more than I have been.
There’s a lot of good work being done in Tennessee. There’s a lot of times where being in the American South seems so backwards and that weighs on my mind sometimes. However, it’s inspiring to see how many people here are doing great things and making differences that will shape the lives of young people.
Again, there’s so much more I’m missing here. It seems so silly to try and boil down the whole experience to four points. I’ll probably be really busy with school for the next year so I’m not sure if I’ll be pursuing any other leadership development opportunities. Still, there’s a lot of work to be done and a lot of joy to be had.
