It was a surprisingly warm day for December and Tessa was determined to make the best of it. While Luc was still asleep, she cornered his sister into helping her put together a picnic. He had, after all, promised her one and it was a perfect day.
Packing everything into a large wicker basket, she smiled. She had found a large, soft, blue blanket in the den. Folding it atop the basket, she slipped out of the kitchen and upstairs, creeping into Luc's room.
He was sprawled across the bed, blanket tangled around legs and one arm resting across his stomach. Tessa stifled a small giggle and plopped onto the edge of the bed.
"Hey, Luc..wake up," she said softly, poking him in the stomach. Luc mumbled something and rolled onto his side, curling into a tight ball. Sighing, she moved to the other side of the bed and shook him. "Up."
He sat up with a small groan, blinking at her. "Tess? You alright?" he mumbled, clearing his throat.
"You promised me a picnic. Downstairs, fifteen minutes," she laughed. She slid from the bed and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before slipping downstairs, knowing he'd be down before the fifteen minutes was up.
Outside the bar, Luc took the basket from her and looped it on one arm, offering her the other. She had the blanket slung over her shoulder and the necklace he had given her in plain sight around her neck. The sight of it made him smile almost as much as her grabbing his hand instead.
"So, where are we going?" he asked, cocking his head to the side a bit.
"You'll see when we get there, don't worry about it," she shot back, a grin flickering through her eyes.
Luc laughed and nodded, rolling his eyes. "Lead the way, beautiful. I will follow you to the edges of space."
Tessa laughed and nudged him with her shoulder. He was a dork but he knew it and it made her laugh.
After about 20 minutes of walking, they reached a small field that had wildflowers in the summer. Although most of the flowers were gone for the season, a few still clung to life, vibrant and welcoming.
"Ta-da!" she beamed, letting go of his hand to set up the blanket.
