Benjamin Hall 👑
Which British landmark is allegedly named after Sir Benjamin Hall?
Sir Benjamin Hall, 1st Baron Llanover (1802-1867), was a Welsh civil engineer and politician for whom the famous "Big Ben" may have been named. Big Ben is the nickname of a bell that hangs in the clock tower at the northern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. Since 2012, the tower is called the Elizabeth Tower in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. Most people mistakenly call the tower "Big Ben" instead.
The bell known as Big Ben weighs 13 tons and is the biggest of the five bells in the Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben rings once for every hour, for example, it rings three times at 3 o'clock and 12 times at 12 o'clock.
Benjamin Hall oversaw the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament, including the installation of the bell known as "Big Ben". Hall remained the First Commissioner of Works under parliament until in 1858. The following year, he was made Baron Llanover, of Llanover and Abercarn in the County of Monmouth.
