People flirt with me like they’re ready for the pleasures of the Cenobites, talking to me like they can handle cosmic suffering beyond flesh... meanwhile a Rubik’s cube defeats them and can’t even handle emotional honesty.

“Laughter is the last defense
before the mind is broken.
I simply remove the defense
and leave the laughter.”
— THE HUMORIST
LORE / BACKGROUND
The Humorist was once a struggling stand-up comedian, whose desperate need for approval curdled into obsession. His routines, once met with silence, devolved into cruelty masked as comedy. After a particularly catastrophic performance ended in violence, he vanished.
He was found by the Order of the Gash, laughing hysterically in an abandoned venue, surrounded by the broken bodies of his audience.
Impressed by his talent for turning suffering into spectacle, they offered him a choice: endless laughter beyond the veil, or oblivion.
He chose laughter.
His former name is lost—stripped away during his transformation.
He is now known only as The Humorist.
There is a line in Ever After High: Once Upon a Time that I'm pretty sure is a Hellraiser reference.
Grandpa Auspicious Charming set up a treasure hunt for his family. One of his treasures "...the pinned mask of Lord Cenobitious.". A made up variant of the word cenobite and reference to pins feels like a Hellraiser reference. I wouldn't bat an eye if Monster High referenced Hellraiser, but I don't know of any fairy tales where puzzle boxes summon masochistic demons.
